newbie here with ford ranger

hey all im rob , just got a 2000 ford ranger 2.5L 4 banger with a manual trans.
So far from what i can tell from using how many litres i use and my odo im getting about 29 mpg pure city. Is this good? Im planning to make a bigger chin spoiler , grille block and tape the gap between the cab and box shut this week any sugestions for better stuff to do? Aero cap is out of the question as i am a contractor and use the bed daily but happy to hear your thoughts!

Welcome to ecomodder.

29mpg in city traffic is pretty good - if they're US gallons - as the ecomodder members' Ford Rangers top out around 33mpg (US)
See
EcoModder Fleet list - EcoModder.com

A bit less good if they're imperial gallons, but then you have more room for improvement ;)

If you click on the Rangers in the list, you can often read, see ( or click through to) what they've done to get better mpg.

An easy mod is increasing tyre pressure, if you hadn't already.

Looks like you've already added an air dam up front - bring it at least as low as the lowest underbody parts.

Keep an eye on the coolant temperature when adding a grille block, especially as summer is drawing closer.

An underbelly pan also helps, as does reducing the size of the wheel arcs and flat covers on the rims.

As for driving style - are you coasting in neutral already ?
If not, give it a try, even if you may be reluctant to do so at first - I know I was.
It'll really help your city mileage - it certainly did for me.

(Hard-core hypermilers will even shut down the engine during coasting - which cuts out powersteering instantly, and power brakes after a few dabs at them).

It takes a bit of practice to see what speed will get you to the next turn, light, stop sign, or whatever, at an appropriate speed.

yeah im using us mpg and im running the tires at 50 psi already. I have been 'granny'driving and coasting in neutral alot too. Next mods will electric fans instead of belt driven and mudflap removal. Il add some pics 4 yall

Hey Rob - welcome to the forum.

I'd also look into getting instrumentation if you haven't already. ScanGauge, Ultragauge, that kind of thing.

It'll help keep you tune your driving technique and keep you motivated by letting you turn driving into a "high score" game.

It seems like wing+cover could be made with very little effort, and also be made so that it could be reconfigured or removed easily if it got in the way of cargo.

I also have a Ranger 4 banger. You're doing well! I'm lucky to get 25 around town. I'm starting to get into better habits. One thing I do is let it lose 5 MPH at the top of every hill, then get it back on the other side.
