newbie from new Zealand

Hi all, and thanks for the nice site.

I joined so i could post my fuel usage, and hopefully pick up a few more tips on reducing it.

The Ford Falcon is built in Australia, is a great car and can go forever on a tankful.

Next thing for me is to convert a few of my numbers (litres and km over here) and get some logs going.

thanks,

Duncan

Welcome to ecomodder! Could I ask for a picture? I've never heard of the falcon before.

and http:///home/dunc3/Photos/2000/01/01/pict0021.jpg Its a large car for NZ, weighs 1650kg (not sure what pounds), but is light for its size. I can get 540km on 60 liters (longer holiday trip) - sorry have not converted any of this to mpg yet - i guess i need to use US gallons for my conversions

Hi Duncan - welcome to the site. And congrats on being the first NZ member! (I think.)

i just did some calculations to get USmpg , and posted to con (my falCON) - can someone check my spreadsheet and confirm my calculations/conversions? Hope you can see it....

Hello,

Here's a program (for Windows) called Convert, and it really can convert any unit to any other unit:

18mpg, huh? You have some room for improvement! :) That's a big car for New Zealand! When I was there (in 1982) with my family, the big cars were Volvos. My family are all over 6', so we rented a Toyota van.

thanks Neil - i was just trying to get a handle on the mpg numbers you all use on this site - are they US gallons or UK gallons - the conversion i used for liters to US gallons is 0.264172 - does this sound right? I have windoze installed somewhere on so will try it out

Hi Duncan, I'm a n00b from just across the river in Aus and born in NZ (christchurch).
Good to see someone else in our hemisphere on here.
Here in Aus people are still a bit stupid about fuel I think... every 2nd car is a V8 and we complain about paying AU$1.70/L, I believe you guys are over NZ$2/L now?

As for your conversion dilemma, the great god Google has us covered, you can simply key in your 'equation' as a search, such as "540km/60L in mpg":
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=e...m%2F60L+in+mpg
And Google will tell you:
"(540 km) / (60 L) = 21.1693125 miles per gallon"

I don't know if that is US or UK gallon, changing the google locale (using google.com instead of .com.au) doesn't seem to have any effect.
21mpg seems more reasonable than 16mpg (edit: ignore that, I read your spreadsheet wrong) for a falcon though... surely our cars are not _that_ bad? hahah.
