Ahh, a trip down memory lane... Nissan used to sell the "liftback" as an option for the regular NX hatch. One could unbolt the hatch and install the liftback to make it a sort of station wagon. All the liftbacks were grey, so they would correspond with whatever color car the buyer wants.

That topper used to be available for the Pulsar back when it was new. I think it was a factory option.

EDIT- I must be getting slow with the ENTER button, need more cafienne!

I actually thought of these the other day. I would not have expected anyone to spot one! I think aftermarket suppliers got in on the act too, making, for example, a sort of pickup tuck bed to go in there.

Yeah, I loved the idea that you could own a "modular" car.

I had one of those (no kammback though) in college, a restore job that I ended up ditching to the junk yard once I found some nasty rust damage in the frame I hadn't caught before. Those were sweet little cars. Sunroofs don't come close to the kind of experience you feel while driving with the T-tops down.

there was one for sale near me a couple wks ago (stock liftback though) for under $1k, only had 140k on it, but did need some work. the guy never mentioned what kind of work it needed, so I decided to forget about it.
but, if another one comes along in decent shape, I think it would be a great ecomodding vehicle.

it would be! a small displacement sentra motor and driveline would drop right in - lots of used 87-90 sentra parts would fit under the skin, so they would not be hard to mod.

the 80's gave us lots of great unique light cars to use as a foundation for a fun eco mod project.

a couple of my faves:

83-88 ford escort exp 2 seater coupe. I have an '88 sitting in my storage lot waiting for some fun. i used to get 34mpg out of the 1.9l cvh motor that was in it - imagine if a 1.6 cvh was put in there and a little more weight removal was done to get the car under 2000 lbs (it was 2300 lbs stock)

91-94 mercury capri convert. These aussie built fords were mazda 323 under the skin and would easily accept a 1.3 ford aspire motor as their drivetrain (complete bolt in). i have a couple of these sitting around too.

92-95 mazda mx3 coupe. nice slippery lines and the ford aspire 1.3 motor is a direct bolt in on this car too :)

can u tell i like fords and mazdas? ;)

You come get it, I might have a couple aspire/festiva motors for you soon. Lol.

Frankly, I'd rather use a 2.0 mazda diesel, or 2.2.
