Ordered/Installed: Perforated White One Way Overlay
this is not printed so will be white. should have extra so if someone else wants to give it a shot I can send some your way. I just ask you to use it and not set it on a shelf. will see if this keeps me a little cooler on the drive home. will last a few years. plan to use on back window but might also try on the sides. only concern is the rear facing DVR.

How much would I need to cover my car? :)
|
What a brilliant idea! Keep us updated if this keeps the interior temperature lower. If so, I'll order some right away!

Xist -- If the windows are ≤26" you'd have 10 feet. If you have thick C-pillars or you can overlap the side window pieces you might get the side windows and backlight out of a full sheet.
|
not shipped yet but Estimated delivery Fri, Jul 17 - Fri, Jul 24. the 26th i will be heading out of town, to Kindersley, SK. CA. will be gone 3 weeks. might not be able to give impressions till i get back if it's here the 26th. coming from NY.

Why not just use window tint?
|
double it? i already have tint. this goes on the outside.
|
Interesting. Would you have more visibility with illegal tint instead?
Laws are weird... |
won't know until i try it. i have legal on the back so that will be a good gauge.

Looking at the pics it looks like about 40% light transmittance. If you add this over 40% transmittance tint, you'll have roughly the same effect as if you'd just gone with 15% transmittance tint. Although the white colour is good for reflecting light, tint films have metallic particles added which serve a similar purpose. Unfortunately it's going to be a hard thing to test properly unless you have two identical cars. |
Just cover one side! :D

Looks like it costs way less than getting professional tint installed and is probably more forgiving in terms of how its installed. For us regular Joes to go down to the parts store and buy a roll of tint will cost about the same as that (much bigger) roll. Application is most likely easier and mistakes not as noticeable so the installer doesn't need to worry as much about dirt under the film or shrinking it perfectly to the window like us "regular" tint guys. I'm interested to see how easy it applies and how well it looks when done. One nice thing about exterior application is that (depending on the window) the window is where you rest your knife to trim the excess, instead of tracing the inside area that requires a more meticulous and steady hand. My rear and side cargo windows would be cake with this stuff as they have a nice gap all the way around them since they don't open and site flush to the body. I'd love to see a white car all done up with white vinyl on the windows. I've been thinking of doing something similar to my Focus and calling it "project space shuttle", all white station wagon (including all rear windows now) with black accents lol.
However, exterior application does open one up for a prank by the local teenager trying to prove to a girl that he's a badass by peeling off window vinyl... plus you can do this with vinyl lol http://www.gifbin.com/bin/112009/125...ollar_bill.gif |

So, what happens if a company has this printed and applied to a new car, and then they remove it and sell the vehicle ten years later. Will it have polka dots? :)
|
lol. not on the window. thats the context I'm using.
I imagine on a new car exposed to sun, yes. this lasts 3-5 years so figure perfs would be shuffled around. |

i scraped/sprayed the window first. was thicker but more flexible than tint. ripped if stressed too much. got the general size: http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...pslehnzlso.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...psxzgywmnm.jpg pretty good eh? http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6gqcgbyw.jpg finished: http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps8bykgg6b.jpg inside view: http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...psztzbjnzv.jpg heat gun on low was good to work out creases. after applying heat, used a wet paper towel to daub instead of rubbing it. moisture cooled it after heat had laid it down. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...psv2qreink.jpg one spot got too much heat and it shrank. i used water in a bottle but don't think i need to. once laid, it was easy to peel. once it hits the sun i should stick real well. will look at the rear side windows to see if there is a chance it will peel off or scrape the white when rolled up/down. these came in also. will see if they hurt mpg's (they don't): http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...psrgagglvf.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...pspd3bp0vs.jpg too many times a storm hit and wasn't able to get to the windows and it gets hot with them up. last. ran with the grille block removed 2 days and mpg instants were lower than usual so it went back on. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6xzwwdrp.jpg engine temps and ac worked the same both ways. have plans for the OEM grille though. *EDIT* didn't notice any change in FE this morning from visors. was noticeably a little quieter from incoming wind. view through rear window was good. similar to darker tint. camera view is not as bad as thought. can still distinguish vehicles in monitor. so far so good. |

Looks like good stuff. I might have to get some of that when I'm back in warmer climes.
Is it easy to get off if you screw up application? |
Nice idea!!!
We installed this on all our windows with our company logo. It work awesome on keeping our building much cooler. |

Very nice, I like it! I'd imagine that would definitely help a good amount at keeping the car cooler.

The same materials applied professionally would be $3K. You could Plastdip a whole car for ~$160-300.
I'm not sure which one has more specialized skills required. Except when it comes to the rear-view mirrors. Spray, hands down. |
yep. spray is good. used several times after i was told where to get it from this forum. like the way it lays down and the UV clear gives it a semigloss that looks good. moons are covered in it.
i will be out of town for a few weeks so there won't be much activity from me, esp after i hit the border. Sprint wants to charge a lot when i get out of area. oh well, i will be enjoying myself at Brightsands in the SK province. been there a few times and really love it. reminds me of days gone by. |
