People on other forums are d**ks.

I was looking to replace the transmission fluid in my Yaris and joined the Yaris forums (Haynes and Chilton do not make manuals for my car yet). There was a great DIY and I was thrilled.
Then I started a thread after an hour or so of searching, inquiring about an OEM part that the previous owner destroyed (rubber air dam), that I had not been able to find anywhere (eBay etc.). Ended up getting an "instead of getting what you want, how about you do this mod with home depot garage door seal?"
Thanks, but no.
Then I get accused of not calling the $ervice department (I've had nothing but bad experiences with any one of them I've ever called) like I'm some kind of asshole, and someone else gets snippy with me about not posting a picture.

It was my first effing post! How am I supposed to put up pictures? Most forums require you to have 5 posts before that. That's just common sense.

[/endrant]

Thank you Ecomodder for not being a bunch of butt-holes.

Yeah, a lot of online communities are just safe havens for people to try and belittle others to make themselves feel better, sad really. Others, like this one, actually have accepting people interested in discussions and a common goal, better than factory efficiency.

Flakbadger, I don't recall seeing your monthly check in our $ervice department recently. I'll see if we can ban you.
:p

Best forum on the internet.

hondatwins.net • Index page

Find a single thread that degrades into two members engaging in a personal duel.

You won't.

Even though I worked on vehicles for close to 40 years, the guys on the Honda Twins forum are really knowledgeable about those bikes. They help me to spend my time wisely, and I have been at this for decades.

Much can be learned by the consideration of the guys on that forum. Just because you are a genius does not give you the right to treat others like they were any less smart than you feel you are yourself.

The real genius is the one who can teach another the relevant knowledge they have, while making it brief, pleasant, and beneficial to others who read the threads involved.

This forum and one other that I belong to: Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Ford truck and SUV owners and enthusiasts Community And Information Source. have very nice and well behaved members. Most others I've seen or joined have varying amounts of poor behavior.

I run a polite, but very quiet forum here: Second Generation Stratus Sebring Sedan Group

But, yah, there are forums out there where there are a few people who are real ducks (replace u with i). Dakota-Durango.com is famous for that. And, predictably, very few of them have fuel economy in mind. It's common to see "Trucks aren't meant to get good gas mileage!" posts over there. Oh, well... They're slowly becoming less and less active as long-time members sell off their performance parts and/or their trucks. Heh.

Thank you, each and every one of you.

I think I am disenfranchised with forums pertaining to one make and model of vehicle... It seems like every time I've joined one (twice with the Yaris, thrice with my old Ranger) there are those three or four people who know everything and are tired of answering the same questions, five or ten people with completely tricked out vehicles that everyone accepts as the "ideal" (forever dooming anyone who tries something new that doesn't align with that narrow definition of what the vehicle should be modified to), and lots of 16-20 year-olds who are unsure how to handle themselves without supervision, so they run around criticizing people and flocking to attack people who haven't used the search feature.
I know there are exceptions to the rule, it's just frustrating. I just felt angry about it and wanted to punch somebody, so I went ahead and wrote this post.

P.S. Now that I know how to change my transmission fluid, there's really no reason for me to be on that other site. They can enjoy their childishness all they want. I won't be a part of it anymore.

I find the 'social/cultural/intelectual evolution' of forums to be fasinating. You 'simplistic' explination is generic but pretty accurate.

Some forums continue to dumb down to unbelieveable levels.
I find ecomodder to be pretty special and unique. Very comfortable yet very SMART!
