2021 Automotive Trends Report

Every year the EPA puts out a report based on data from the previous model year. It of course is focused on fuel economy but they also have some interesting info on technology. I find the different approaches takes by different companies interesting.

If you look at the chart below the Europeans are big into direct injected, turbocharged engines with lots of gears and stop / start. Ford is right there too with 79% turbo. Toyota and Nissan are bucking the trends with 3% and 4%.

On the other hand the Japanese like their CVTs - 94% for Subaru and 89% for Nissan.

Mazda is the king of cylinder deactivation (64%)

You might not think of Stellantis and think hybrids but they are in 3rd place with 10% behind Toyota and Mercedes.

The other thing that might blow some minds is who has extra greenhouse gas credits to burn

Who guessed Stellantis? !!!!
