Range Extender: Matching power and torque to suite the generator
This paper is interesting in that it goes into the details of modding a 250cc motorbike engine to suite the chosen generator so that you end up with a light, compact and efficient genset for your city commuter (mostly) EV, without using electronics to get the required Volts and Amps for your battery.
I like the simplicity of Serial Hybrids vs the complex drivetrain and control reqd for parallel hybrids. Tuning and tweaking an ICE to run efficiently at a constant rpm is also much simpler than trying to get the ICE efficient over a wide rev range. ie: The optimal cam profile, ignition timing and intake and exhaust lengths are all constant and achievable without electronic ignition and VVT etc-etc. As grid power here in the 'New South Africa' is more off than on; Serial Hybrids also give one the option of always having house power when you get home in said vehicle..! https://sci-hub.se/10.4271/2011-24-0085 Another link for any (2wd) bikers here, where something similar was done: :) https://endless-sphere.com/sphere/th...d-hubs.110812/ |

Next time I go to the library I might try their computer. The 'suspicious network activity' might be the lack of Windows vulnerabilities.
I get phone calls from people who want me to go to my [Windows] computer so they can show me that it's compromised. That's exactly why I don't use Windows. :) |

Anyhow, yes, there are pros and cons to such a design. But I think as ecomodders having a simple design is of importance. No need to go crazy on it to where it's impossible to implement. |
One complexity with serial hybrids is, balancing input power with output power. Most mass market serial hybrids (e.g. Nissan e-Power, Honda eHEV, etc) have an electric motor providing all power driving the wheels (e.g. 150kw/200hp in the case of the Civic), while also having very small batteries (1.05kwh in the case of the Civic). These batteries can only provide maybe 20% of the motor's input power. The ICE needs to be revved up and down before the electric motor can draw power from the combined ICE + battery source, which requires very complex control, arguably more complex than a parallel hybrid.
This is a non-issue if you have a simply massive battery, able to provide 100% of the motor's peak power on its own. However, you often lose the ability to select lithium batteries optimized for capacity rather than output, reducing range or greatly increasing weight and cost. |
I like the concept of a through-the-road serial hybrid. Two independent systems with the road acting as a clutch to modulate the two.
It just seems simpler. You can still have regen and V2G. |
