Range Extending Trailers and............
I continue to data mine and process materials relating to the T-100/Viking project.
For anyone thinking about a trailer, here are some references which may be helpful. You can just GOOGLE them: *tzero,AC Propulsion BEV sports car (for tzero/Long Ranger RXT-G baseline) *Low- Emission Range Extender for Electric Vehicles,A C Propulsion and South Coast Air Quality Management District.( for performance with RXT-G) *Theoretical Performance of EV Range Extender Compared with Plugin Hybrid and sister document by author ( for HONDA Civic BEV performance, with and without RXT-G trailer) *EMAV pru ( was to be on sale by now) *Rinspeed 'Dock+Go' ( should appear at 2012 Geneva Auto Show) *Jeep/Mopar off-road 'Trail' camper *JEEP/Mopar off-road 'Extreme' camper ------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Airstream Base Camp *Nissan Actic and trailer ------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Mr.Sharkey's EV Pusher trailer *J.B.Straubel's EV Porsche 944/EV Pusher Trailer:Version 1&2 |
Added References
I've added a few more references to the list.I'll just keep adding to the original post Permalink to keep 'em all together.
There are some exceptional people out there doing extraordinary things! But you all knew that. |
candidate cars
Local car critic Ed Wallace road tested the Scion IQ for a week. While at Cd 0.31 (impressive for a car this length) he was only able to pull 42 mpg on the highway.
'Tail-less' cars like these might be good candidates for an RXT,whether as a streamlining structure alone RXT-A,or combined with extra batteries RXT-B,or with a generator RXT-G. Here would be a beginning list of candidates which might benefit on out of town, extended highway driving: *Scion IQ *Smart ED *Aston Martin Cygnet *Mitsubishi i-MiEV' *Nissan Leaf *Suzuki Twin *Tata Nano *Honda P-NUT *Chevrolet SONIC *FIAT 500 *Toyota Prius V |
Streamlined Range-Extender Trailers
I'm going to attempt some images of trailers I've done along with some 'thought experiments' for rigs I've seen.
*the first image is the only extant photo of the 2-wheel trailer which in un-finished form allowed 50-mpg behind the CRX. *the next two images are of the un-finished 1-wheel trailer which averaged 48 mpg with two vacuum lines burned off the back of the carburetor. You can see the soot on the face of the trailer from the over-rich metering. *Next is the current Viking 2-wheeler,taken at Bonneville last September. The highest-ever-recorded mpg for the T-100 occurred on this trip. *The next images are of a beautiful 1932 Ford Model A and trailer which I couldn't leave alone. *Then two of Alan Cocconi's 'hybrids',his CRX and 'Long Ranger' RXT-G,shot at the Solar 500 in Phoenix,Arizona in 1993, and then Alan's (AC Propulsion) 'tzero' EV sports car and Long Ranger. *The last are of HONDA's 1st-gen Insight, adapted from an Insight Brochure I got in Tokyo, depicting a streamlined telescoping 2-person camping trailer with gap-fillers of approx. Cd 0.12. At Phoenix,in '93,I was immediately struck with the idea of streamlining the trailer as a means to extend range even further through load-avoidance. Errr ... all links but the second one (which points to your interesting album) , lead to the same image . |
load-avoidance

I'd already had reasonable success with the first two trailers by partially streamlining them and I figured Alan's trailer,or the one Volvo had brought could have extended their 'hybrid' generator fuel even further if the trailer itself was properly streamlined. It would be the aerodynamic equivalent of xerisscaping a home's yard so as to shade it from direct solar gain in the summer,or adding thermal insulation to it's envelope so as to allow the air conditioning system to shed part of it's load, providing the same cooling level with less energy. In engineering the term to describe this is load avoidance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As to the images,I apologize.I've been moving so much paper around that I've misplaced my original notes to myself for Photobucket. We managed to get the pictures up,but not like earlier posts where each image appears, with the enlargement bar atop it. I don't know how to fix it right now.It seems like every time I come back to the computer, some change has been made and I no longer know how to navigate.I simultaneously love and hate computers! |

http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/...ntitled-10.jpg Now in your EM reply click "insert image" (yellow mountain/planet icon in toolbar) and past address there. EM does the rest and you get this. http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/...ntitled-10.jpg The "click to enlarge" banner is automatic (if needed). The image still lives on PB so if you take it down, move, rename, etc then EM would stop showing it. Otherwise pretty straightforward. Rock on! Bob |

2nd attempt at images
I'm going to attempt the image posting again.
I give up.The computer does not display the icon needed to get the image over from Photobucket. Al ganged all the scans together when he dragged 'em into PhotoBucket and it looks like they are recognized only as a group, rather than individual images. It doesn't seem to matter which one I click on,they all have the same address. They don't come up as a photo at all.And most should be 8.5"X11.0". It may be that they can only be viewed as an album. And they were scanned out of order. Frustrating! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- So it looks like viewers will just click onto the album and use the NEXT/PREVIOUS icons to view them. The images as presented are: 1 T-100 & Viking at Bonneville 2 two-wheel trailer and CRX 3 one-wheel trailer and CRX 4 Insight with streamlined trailer 5 Insight 6 tzero with streamlined long Ranger 7 tzero with Long Ranger 8 CRX with Long Ranger 9 ditto 10 Model A Ford with trailer 11 Model A Ford with streamlined trailer That's the best I can do for now. |
