Reddit has a little freakout over Bam Zip Pow's aero pickup & boat tail trailer

http://i.imgur.com/lPaURnC.jpg

Someone spotted the T-100 with the 1-wheel aero trailer in the wild and posted pics on Reddit.

REDDIT: "Aerodynamic" Pick up : WTF

What ensues is a combination of ignorance...
  • "This would not increase fuel mileage in any way."
  • "Given the extra weight it probably decreases vehicle efficiency."
  • "Exactly. Unless he's speeding backwards often"
  • "I can't help but feel a tonneau cover would suffice."
... plus a surprising amount of attempts at education to refute these statements.

I like how someone mentions Phil's work as well.

HydroJim 02-05-2015 11:13 AM

The amount of misinformation out in the world really scares me sometimes...

Frank Lee 02-05-2015 11:33 AM

Is that a thief making his getaway in the background?

NickelB NL 02-05-2015 01:12 PM

Its the ignorance that is created by the marketing boys of the big firms

BamZipPow 02-05-2015 01:19 PM

The shooter actually asked my permission to shoot piccies of the truck. He didn't ask any questions about the rig at all.

MetroMPG 02-05-2015 01:23 PM

That's a little odd, considering he was planning to share it with the world.

Daox 02-05-2015 01:30 PM

Quite odd. He obviously knew there'd be interest in it.

BamZipPow 02-05-2015 01:52 PM

There...made my post in there. ;)

MetroMPG 02-05-2015 02:03 PM

Very succinct.

Quote:

Stock gas mileage is 16 city/19 highway. This truck has over 424,000 miles with the original V6 engine and automatic transmission. The aero cap has a working removable hatch and the single wheel trailer can be disconnected. The trailer hitch has dual air shocks to dampen the bumps and oscillations from the trailer's short wheel base as well as an air spring/bag suspension to assist in the dampening. Best gas mileage to date at 65mph is 33mpg while towing the trailer. Estimating the aero cap weighs in at around 75lbs while the trailer is around 200lbs. There isn't any duct tape holding anything on and everything is bolted down or pinned down. This truck can be returned to a fully stock setup in about an hour. Gas cost savings to date has been over $4000 from the past 6 years which has paid for the truck, trailer, and good portion of the gas used.

I don't really understand the order of comments. BZP, did you comment after all of those comments or did they continue to be ignorant even after you said your 'before and after'?

That austin guy certainly seemed to know a thing or two.

You will need to sort the comments by "New"...

I guess we should all invest in those ecomodder stickers to "bling" out our rides ;) That being said there will always be ignorant nay-sayers to ideas that are progressive, and do not appear to be so. I think it is better to take the high road, vs arguing with plebians that decide a name like "HorrificAnalInjuries" is a good choice for a forum handle.

Cheers to you BZP

Has anyone ever seen even a remote level of knowledge displayed by the average reddit poster? I guess I don't read the ones about the Kardashians so maybe there is a solid knowledge base there. If I found myself in large agreement with a majority of reddit posters I'd have to question my position even more.

Reddit

*The 'Dark Aero' was significant enough to an onlooker that it precipitated some photos.
*The photos made it online.
*There's now an interchange of thought about the images.
*And a full range of reactions.
Regardless of what people think right now, those images are in people's heads. They'll never return to a world where something like Dark Aero doesn't exist.
Over time, they may see something else which causes them to reflect back on what they've already experienced.
When Adam took his first look at Eve he was probably startled at her differences. But with 7,000,000,000 people on Earth now,I reckon he got over it.

cowmeat 02-05-2015 05:57 PM

I'm shocked that many reddit users quit jaying off long enough to post like that!

Man, your truck is a hit!

fusion210 02-06-2015 08:30 AM

Ecomodding is very fringe, even though manufacturers have basically been ecomodding their own cars for a very long time. The best you can hope for is a few to gain interest and put their knowledge to use.

Modders only add fringe temporarily for tuft testing. They remove it immediately afterwards.

What's the old saying? There is no such thing as bad publicity. All those people have seen the pic and are talking about it, sharing it and talking about it more. If this got spread enough it could find its way onto an internet publication and with a new cote of paint could probably get a spread in a truck or Toyota performance magazine, especially considering the high miles on it I'm sure some Toyota writer somewhere would love to do an article. For a truckin article it would most likely be an article on how to improve FE and they'd use BZP's truck as an "extreme" example but it's still more pics in front of more people who talk to more friends; good publicity. And all he had to do was park at a store and let some guy take a pic of the truck.

My brother-in-law wants to take some piccies of it and send to his buddies in charge of those things at the company he used to work fer and retired from...Toyota Motor Sales here in Torrance. I told him to go fer it. ;)

I left tufts on once for about a week! :D

Outsiders looking in.

I'd enjoy what BZP had to say about the trucker perspective via CB radio. Believe I recommended it to him the time we met. Clays CB Shop in SA on IH10 near the Petro. Clay and head tech Robert. Stopped off to see them last week when up there job hunting. Run the power cabling yourself, etc. A Wilson 5000 magnetic mount, but a permanent would've better.

Truck drivers are good for traffic and weather reports. Everyone uses mile markers to let you know where rain starts and stops for example. Good for sorting traffic strategy as a result. And plenty of those guys have an interest in FE. Have heard some good talks about the tenths on the quarterly fuel tax report. There will be some aholes, but the fact of vehicle age and total miles will get respect.

Truly great reception (no noise from vehicle electrical) and on the flats out west in Texas one can pick up oncoming ten miles out. And have long discussions with traffic in same direction. I had a pair of independents running hot radios pass me near Ozona while we were eastbound and was still listening to them twenty miles back as they climbed out of Junction and I was just descending into that river valley.

Truckers all understand FE. And old picks ups. Tell em you scaled it on a Cat Scale as part of your numerical baseline. And maybe you're running Centramatic Wheel Balancers. Cool running tires are another point of intersection. Etc.

I know that dashboard is crowded. One can rack mount from the interior roof behind pass seat and hang mike from retractable. Turn off and it is invisible. Antenna can be removed and mount is so low as to not be there. A separate speaker gives great audio fidelity.

I made this recommendation when we met, but it fits this thread.

Reddit was interesting going into 2006 elections, but never since.

George Carlin explained about 'average IQ'. Participation varies among the subreddits. I wouldn't expect much from /r/WTF.

https://www.reddit.com/subreddits/

there are ~6000 active out of 248,776 total:

/r/TIL is Today I Learned

/r/AMA is Ask Me Anything

/r/explainlikeimfive is ...uhh, Explain Like I'm Five

Edit: I searched on 'aerodynamics' and on page 2 I found where aerohead's T-100 made an appearance.

The front looks like it takes styling cues from a Veyron.

Priceless:

An engineer once told me that cars are pretty aerodynamic, but the real drag is from the underside which no one ever streamlines. I don't know if it's true, but he was a pretty well educated guy.

College station, Texas. He actually lives very close to me. It is a college town, which specifies in engineering so he might be a professor trying to prove something.
