Robot Cantina: 212cc Insight and Kubota Saturn.
I am home sick.
No, I will not go towards the light. I really want to work on projects, but I keep telling myself that I need to stay in my room and get better faster. Can I go into the out now? It is weird how YouTube's suggestions change over time. It was pretty much just showing variations of the last 5 things I watched until it suggested the Kubota-powered Saturn. Wait, what? No I will not link it! |
Sick at home or pining for the fjords?
|
Who doesn't pine for the fiords?
I have the sniffles, a cough, and sound like Lurch. |

cold I'm told, freezin the reason. |
Robot cantina is pretty much my guide to build a leaf range booster. Because of that channel I know that a 207 to 212cc gasoline engine is probably only good for about 40mph pushing a leaf.
A 390 to 420cc gasoline engine is probably good for 60mph behind a leaf. And a go-kart cvt won't work how I thought it would on something the size of the leaf. Basically the cvt will run through their entire ratio regardless of what how fast the load is going. I thought if the vehicle wasn't up to speed the driven end of the go-kart cvt would select a numerically lower ratio until the driven end speeds up. Some amount of fiddling with the cvt might get you there but it doesn't seem like it. |
Surely even the fiords have a local summer! :)
Then you can appreciate the pebbly bits! :)
I watched most of those videos. He made the 212cc engine go 50 MPH and 54 MPG, but not necessarily on the same run, and then swapped in a 420cc engine, but he wants to be able to go back and forth between the two. I don't know if he modified the 212cc as much as possible, but he keeps modifying the 420cc. The last video suggests he blew up the engine and ended the project, but then there seem to be more videos. I wonder if I would understand anything he said if I were in full health. |
The 212cc engine pretty much stayed stock.
He did all kinds of nutty stuff to the 420cc engine. |

This has the original Insight 5-speed, a go-cart CVT, and a belt drive. How many losses does he have?! He modified the camshaft, installed a high-compression cylinder head, stainless steel valves, 18-pound valve springs, and ARC billet connecting rod, and an ARC billet flywheel that didn't cool enough, so he removed it. I felt disappointed that he didn't find a flywheel that cool adequately or modify it. He installed an oil pump and upgraded the carburetor, a DynoCams cam, custom header exhaust, a better spark plug, and governor delete. He tried running the CVT without all of the pucks and it kept failing, so he drilled out the steel weights in the rubber pucks, and something else broke. He said that he would continue to modify it, but it must have been in episode 13. |
I guess that was supposed to be a cliff-hanger. He did quite a bit more work with the big block in season two:

You are choking you thread with video embeds. Compare:
Predator powered Honda InsightI hope you're feeling better. |
That has thirteen videos about Saturns!
I was totally going to work on projects today, but my stomach was messed up. It is a mild annoyance now, but my brother keeps coughing, and he has a fever. I have had a negligible fever all week, but I am hardly coughing. Hey! My throat feels okay! :) I gave my brother a bag of cough drops and he ate three immediately. It is awesome how I will repeatedly and loudly tell him to or to not do something and he completely ignores me. Before the pandemic a friend realized that my brother wasn't washing his hands, and now telling him to wash his hands is just another routine--if he remembers he will make sounds until we remember. However despite telling him "roll up your sleeves, water first, rub your hands together, and use your wrist" he never rolls up his sleeves, always gets soap first, and not only does he never rub his hands together, he never holds more than his fingertips under the water. Sometimes he turns off the water with his wrist, but often I remind him and he uses his hand. Every single time he goes to the bathroom I am supposed to stop what I am doing and not provide step-by-step instructions because he will ignore me, but hold the arms of my adult brother, and make him do everything as correctly as possible. |

I am pretty sure that I posted the Saturn videos, but freebeard made my post explode with his mind.
It is the only logical explanation! :D I kept checking and he finally posted a new video after two weeks! He adjusted the governor, fixed some stuff, and increased the top speed, lamenting she's giving it all she's got, but there is too much aerodynamic drag. Aerodynamic drag?! https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1671407256 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayX3Ab7itVo |

Your post made my browser explode. but Chromium is, to quote Neidermeyer from Animal House, 'worthless and weak'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uvFpqbfB4c |
I used Opera for years and years, but Chromium just isn't the same.
|
I looked around to see what's available. Firefox is the only non-weirdo brower (Vivaldi, Nidori), but it's rated as slower.
Had you considered that Pluto hasn't had a single year since the Founding of the USofA? https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/CcDp...RRK7__1_.0.jpg cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/CcDpRGJXSzn1IWOW3XKMVuJ82Uo=/0x0:858x582/1200x0/filters:focal(0x0:858x582):no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/3464552/B-KM7lRCYAARRK7__1_.0.jpg Notice how Earth years bunch up around the Perihelion. |

The entire robot cantina came down with "The latest update of That Which Can't be Mentioned on YouTube."
Is that still verbotten or is this like him referring to "The Jungle Site?" They also had a cold snap and some pipes froze, so the entire video was saying "Happy New Year!," explaining the delays, and installing a voltmeter to show his tiny alternator keeps his motorcycle battery charged: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwL4WO5tqIU Happy New Year! Except you, freebeard. Okay. Maybe. |

Robot Cantina does a grill block, front belly pan, and mirror delete.

Jimbo also installs an exhaust gas temperature gauge and adjusts the injector pump fuel limit.
He put spares on the front in order to use fifth gear and reached a higher top speed, but the car was slower overall, although it was still slow once he restored the correct tires, so clearly he needs to figure out what else is going on with an engine with 8 hours of run time. I templated his car: https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1673856337 How high resolution should your picture be when you do this? :) That car is 52.2" tall and it is 175 pixels tall in that picture, so so each pixel is .3". The template indicates the back of the spoiler is 4.176" too low, but it could be between 3.876" and 4.476" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90j4593498w |
Resolution is not the problem, it's focal length. You want a telephoto shot.

Someone claimed that the grill block made the car less aerodynamic--there isn't much in the engine bay.
Someone else, who seems to have a crush on Julian, said "One does not simply use a template! You need to use CFD and wind tunnel analysis!" A template is indicative of two-dimensional thinking, what?! He or she ordered me to template these: https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1673994001 https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1673993638 https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...2&d=1673993671 |
I haven't seen an un-riced Opel Calibra for a while... The Daewoo Espero is also fading away. The Opel Kadett E can still be found quite easily, yet it's not so easy to see any so close to stock anymore.
|
He said that he wants to pursue aerodynamic modifications because the engine's giving it all she's got, Capt'n!
This is a science project, not a daily driver, so I suggested adding to the back to it resembles the Insight. No! The only options are CFD and extensive wind tunnel testing! Cool. I don't envision Jimbo building a wind tunnel to satisfy one commenter. Maybe Mark Rober... ...to test windbreakers... Let's say he builds a Kamm-back with cardboard-aided design, he tuft-tests, modifies, and repeats. Science! |
You mean that Kubota engine? I'm actually surprised it's being used for such a project, at all... Well, the Opel Kadett E was quite an aerodynamic benchmark back in the day.
|
Jimbo gets a forsaken 80s Volkswagen diesel engine working.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD5Tgws50B8
He is going to swap it into the Insight and then swap in the Harbor Freight v-twin engine. |
Even such an "outdated" engine might do wonders in an early Insight bodyshell.
|
He modified other engines, so I am interested to see what he does with this!
Of course, if he kept the last engine, and just did proper aeromods he would see real improvements! I dreamed of a world where I could just pick up an old red Saturn and a 10-pack of coroplast from Home Depot and said "Hey Jimbo, this is how it is done!" |

Jimbo reattached the spoiler, removed the antenna, and fixed the engine
He set new speed and MPG records, but I doubt it was from the antenna delete and reinstallation of the spoiler! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1rrTxsVJt0
|
Jimbo installed a turbo! :)
He needed to fabricate many parts himself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j7pBPRKh18
|
JImbo adjusts the tubo extensively
This seems like min-maxing and seemed like all work, no excitement:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwK9XfL85Uw&t=628s |
Considering how some naturally-aspirated Diesels actually didn't respond so well to turbo, it might be interesting to find out if the Kubota would withstand with it.
|
It seems like he got everything figured out and it is running well.
|
He added boost and cut a vent in the roof.
It didn't seem like he accomplished much, just tried.
Boy can I relate! :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLltEO95qKs |
At least an intercooler is supposed to increase reliability of the engine, which might be quite critical for such an undersized engine clearly overstressed.
|
Jimbo bought a 1969 Renault R10 and asked for engine swap suggestions.
He bought it off Mr. Goodpliers and said he could rebuild the engine, but that isn't what we do here.
The car only weighs around 1,550 pounds, so a small engine would go a long way, but I want to see if an engine powerful enough to actually cruise at highway speeds, not redline, would be more effective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ20LBK13aQ |
There was no Renault R10 in my country, yet the Dauphine which is quite similar used to be available here.
|
Jimbo modified the injector pump timing and add more boost for more speed and better fuel economy
At the end he pulled a dent from the Renault: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UDvByB4RZU
