Parts rant

On the way home the other day all of the sudden the shifter is dead won't change gears. Short version it was stuck inn first so I was able to limp it home about a mile or so. So some inspections at both ends of the shifter cable reveal one of the shift cables is off the mount on the transmission. Push it on but it pulls off way to easy.

So it appears the answer is to order the shift cable assembly.

26"X29" Box.

To replace the cable requires dropping the exhaust and removing the heat shield, removing the air cleaner assembly, the battery tray assembly, various brackets and trim pieces.

Or just pry the bushing out of the new cables and snap in place.

Interestingly the there are aftermarket replacements for the other cable end in the picture and kits for the automatic.

What a waste to ship a part that large for a 1"X3/4" part not to mention cost and time savings to repair.

Hmm looks like a known kink failure part and that box was probably cheaper to buy and ship than a long skinny shipping tube. Ups used to have a 108" L-W-G maximum so packing tubes longer than a couple foot probably wouldn't ship.

I remember having to throw a $1000 barcode scanner away because a tiny piece of spring steel that translates pulling the trigger to pushing the switch had broken. It was like a 1 cent part, but you couldn't just order it from anywhere.

Once you can optically scan an object and have a blueprint be automatically generated, that will be a gamechanger.

Seems like a possibility. The part in question has a hard center surrounded by a stiff rubber. Imagine it would be a two step process.
