Sister flips out at my hypermiling. :(

She noticed me EOCing my Civic and flipped out. Says don't do that with a date in the car. Accuses me of being cheap.

Previously, my Mom noticed me EOCing, but didn't flip out as badly as my sister.

How do your non-hypermiling family and friends react?

Mostly they stare in awe at my fuel economy and try to buy my car.

I flip out when people EOC coast too. IMESHO you have to be brain dead to shut off almost all of your car's safety features while actively driving on a public road.

how many safety features do you lose?

Yeah. Understandable. But I don't think my sister and mother know that. Their reactions are based differently.

But my '89 Civic hatchback has no power assisted steering, so the steering feels exactly the same without the engine running and thus still remains nimble.

The brakes do have vacuum assist, but the engine is always turned back on before that's used up. And, of course, as a hypermiler, we look far enough ahead to pretty much never use the brakes.

Under most circumstances, I'd say the EOC lasts for no more than 7-10 seconds, if lucky.

Sorry about the explosion of ignorance from your family. I put up with this as well from both my family and my fiance's family. Telling me all the time to take my mods off, drive faster etc, etc, etc! Even after a year and increasing my fuel economy by over 15 mpg in my Escort, all I get is my car would look better without my mods. Arguments have broke out between me and my mom, so I feel you there :(

I have to explain that there are things that my hard earned money can be better spent on, such as a WEDDING! My fiance still won't ride with me, which can be a win depending on your perspective :)

EOC is considered an advanced technique for this reason. However, all electrical components are still receiving power. You still have a few power brake applications before the vacuum runs out. The most EOC does for me is no power steering, which I prefer over power steering.

when people say drive faster this is dangerous ect speed up ect ill give it some throttle and hit a turn too fast just enough for the rear to slide a bit they normally panic and stfu

Gonna have to echo and enforce what Baby Diesel said. When properly done, EOC doesn't disable ANY safety features. Your ignition should be on, which means everything is functioning as it is supposed, the only thing that isn't 'normal' is the engine is off. Airbags, seat belts, fancy advanced features like radar crash detection will still be on and functioning, you still have vacuum in your booster for brakes, ABS still works too as does traction control and all that other stuff.

Obviously, if you don't know how to EOC properly, it is dangerous. Just the same as driving a car is dangerous if you don't know how to do it properly.

Its a 17 year old Escort, appearance probably isn't one of your top priorities. ;)

My wife doesn't mind me hypermiling, its my occasional aggressive driving that gets her attention (driving in Korea teaches you to fit cars where they shouldn't fit). Now if I comment on how her driving could be more efficient, that'll get her going. I don't do that any more.

Tell them you'll drive normal when they're in the car if they'll pay for gas.

I don't even lose power steering in this car.

Hell, my iPod doesn't even cut out.

That said, I almost never EOC with people. Because they tend to be brain dead. But I do gently P&G with neutral.
