I guess if the elevated tramway ran down the center of existing roads it could work.

The "rational grid" reminds of me of the original plan for Los Angeles. The engineers designed the freeway system to have parallel freeways every two miles. The engineers ignored the pre-built environment, so the idea was nice but far from realistic.

I definitely agree that roadway interference hurts buses and streetcars, while subways cost too much. In the 1980's you could get 5 miles of elevated train for the cost of one mile of subway.

I definitely like the solar part :

Our ultra-efficient vehicles need much less power than cars on roadways can ever achieve. So little, that the system can be powered by 2 foot wide solar panels on the guideway. A transportation infrastructure that uses no oil (not even for lubrication) can greatly reduce air and water pollution and reduce or eliminate imported oil, improving our energy independence and thus national security.

solar roadways won't be very "effective" at producing electricity when all the cars are sitting there, bumper-to-bumper, in grid-lock!

How much power does it take to operate the mag-lev? Can the solar panels cover that? Or is it permanent magnets?
