Slushbox '95 Camry - 35.5 MPG - A believer!

I never realized so much fuel efficiency could be found from just modified driving habits. I have been reading the site for a couple of weeks and put some of the driving ideas into play last night. A completely unmodified (don't even know the tire pressures :D) 1995 Toyota Camry LE with 115k on the 2.2L 4 cylinder engine and 4 speed transmission netted me over 35.5 mpg in mixed driving. I am definitely a believer to say the least.

I plan on trying aerodynamic modifications that remain largely unseen. The wife drives the car almost exclusively in the city for volunteer work. So that will mean a good education for her getting the best mpg and shutting the car off when necessary... and also means the aero mods have to stay very modest. Planning on buying a SGII soon.

I definitely look forward to learning more and pushing 40 mpg with a mid-sized automatic family hauler. :) The other cars are going to have to wait, it's my intention to primarily ride my bike to work over the winter in NE Ohio.

A picture to help envision what I am working with:

Previous car (same body, different color) that was flipped for a profit, will update when I get home.

Looks just like my mom's car! But ours is a stick, though it does rev kinda high.

Anyway, welcome to ecomodder!

Wow, never noticed your location. Yep, my wife is originally from the Mentor area and my mother in law is living near Ashtabula. So I was up that way just this weekend.

I have a 1999 Camry 2.2 LE, I get about 21MPG for normal driving, and If I drive with gentle( not extreme) fuel saving driving habits, I get about 26MPG.

WOW, you get 35.5MPG, it is very good.

Welcome to the site and congrats on the excellent mpg!

That was a one-time deal. You will notice my fuel logs are quite a bit lower, especially with this nasty winter we are having. It will be nice to see what the wife and I can squeeze out of the car this summer. :)

Slushboxes aren't all bad. I have gotten good numbers from my Celebrity, which has a V6 as well. The last few days before I parked it, I got 35 mixed driving and over 40 on the highway. Can't wait till this summer when I get to take it out again and hopefully do even better.

I have a 1999 camry le 2.2 4 banger, I too saw mpg of about 35.8 on a commute from Bakersfield to orange county. I coasted big time down some really steep grades but other then that I cruised at 62 mph and according to my ultra gauge I was getting 40 mpg at that speed pretty sweet for a slushbox. http://ecomodder.com/forum/fe-graphs/sig5613a.png
