No mention of year of engine... since it was "cheap", it's probably not brand new... mid '90's put out about 106 hp.

What does a stripped out Metro shell with a bike drivetrain weigh- 1000 lbs?

It should go pretty good. I'd imagine they have a tough time getting enough traction at times.

I'd also imagine FE to be pretty bad, with crazy rpms at highway speeds.

There are some great ideas here that could be used for trike building. I like the Metros old stick rigged up for shifting the cycle engine.

This also does bring up some interesting possibilities about putting a SMALLER than stock engine in a Metro or similar.

That chain connection from the cycle tranny to the differential also looks pretty interesting and gives some ideas for different ways an electric motor could be hooked in.

The only EV Metro I ever saw had a chain going straight from the motor to the transaxel similar to this setup.

There's a Suzuki Swift team from Québec successfully in Rally racing (from what I've seen at our competition in MO).

In our tournament, the vehicle has to be robust: "Low-Water Bridge" crossings often have at least 4-6" of water to ford at speed, and high velocities include air-time on abrupt hills. I've observed this team the last 2 years and have really been impressed with the how the vehicle holds-up. I also give the team credit for their expertise...

I wouldn't write-off the modified Suzuki-clone as a racing-machine...

Thats the great thing with bike motors.
Infinite gearing possibilities.
Just change one gear @ a time and record results.
It appears to be 4:1 right now.
10 teeth on tranny 40 teeth on diff. (as best as i can count from the pics)
say you're twisting 6500rpm @ 60mph
Change tranny gear to 12 teeth and you are down to 3.33:1
now your twisting 4875rpm @ 60mph
add infinitum.
what a great way to increase engine load by reducing rpm @ speed.
if load gets too great you just change back up.
If the engine would produce enough torque you could lope down the highway @ 60mph twisting ~ 1500rpm.
That'd get you real close to 100mpg.
Just another way of looking at the equation.
