The newer Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel installed in the Dodge Sprinter van is a surprisingly powerful engine. Is that the engine we are using?

I Wish!!! This is a 1984 W126 diesel...pretty good on the Car...We'll see how she performs on the Truck...

Belated welcome, Torontocity.

And... sounds like a really interesting project. You won't find me accusing anyone of having an underpowered engine! I'm of the opinion that my 49ish horsepower is excessive. :) I'd gladly trade some of it for more efficiency.

I hope you'll keep us updated. Please start a dedicated thread and we'll put it in the Project Library.

PS - I spent my first 15 years in Scarberia. :)

Congratulations, Torontocity - is that the engine you had planned to use in your intro post?

Looking forward to your driving impressions & fuel economy reports.

Well...i had the choice between the Turbo 300SD and non Turbo 300D...I went with the Turbo...It Pulls Good...........

Cool!

I used to have an old LandCruiser FJ60. I pulled out the straight six gasser and put in a Canadian market Toyo 3B four cylinder diesel. I added a turbo that I got on fleaBay and it ran great. If anything it accelerated faster with the new engine, and it improved my FE from 14 mpg to 25 mpg --Great Success!

Good luck with your project -- and it sounds great -- like a real truck!

Should really have tried to keep one thread going on this topic...

Anyway, here's the other thread discussing this project:

the OM617, the one with turbo makes 150hp @ nearly 5k! kkk makes a k26 turbo which is next size larger direct bolt on with integrated wastegate. the factory turbo was a bit too small therefore the high rpms required to make any power.
if you ever do any work on it port the head and look for an intake manifold off
another benz i can look up if you are interested.
intercool and consider water injection to manage your egts now that you are dragging around another 2-4k Lbs with 2x the CD to boot.

once you get it tuned you can expect some interesting MPG!

the 700t is it 4 or 5 speed, you made the adapter from scratch?
what did you do for a flywheel/clutch? do you have any pictures?

i have been wanting to do this to a early 70's f-350....

wow COOL

what a trip. the sound - so misplaced.
be sure to maintain all 8 QTS of oil or parts of your crank will run dry.
did you make a new/mod/or baffle the oilpan. acceleration will likely
starve ze kurbelwelle.

otherwise totally *****en! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
