In some 3rd-world markets such as Brazil, India and Sub-Saharan Africa, Toyota offers this. Similar in size to the Yaris, but designed to be cheaper to manufacture.

Its Brazilian versions are all fitted with flexfuel engines, a 1.3L only available for the hatchback and a 1.5L available for both bodystyles. In India there is a 1.4L turbodiesel also available.

How does the fuel economy compare to the Yaris?

It has roughly the same fuel economy as the Yaris. It was designed to be cheaper to build, but in the long run only the single-arm wipers might lead to an overall lower maintenance cost :D

Last year, my mother got an Etios as a replacement to her former '07 Chevrolet Celta. It's a hatchback with the 1.3L, and performance-wise it's better than I was expecting.
