In some 3rd-world markets such as Brazil, India and Sub-Saharan Africa, Toyota offers this. Similar in size to the Yaris, but designed to be cheaper to manufacture.


Its Brazilian versions are all fitted with flexfuel engines, a 1.3L only available for the hatchback and a 1.5L available for both bodystyles. In India there is a 1.4L turbodiesel also available.

It has roughly the same fuel economy as the Yaris. It was designed to be cheaper to build, but in the long run only the single-arm wipers might lead to an overall lower maintenance cost

Last year, my mother got an Etios as a replacement to her former '07 Chevrolet Celta. It's a hatchback with the 1.3L, and performance-wise it's better than I was expecting.
