I once fit a jetski inside my Subaru Legacy, with the hatch closed. Wish I had a photo of that, but I had the seats all the way forward (I'm 6'2") and the front of the boat was touching the front windshield. It just fit.

It used to be more common to see people hauling really oversized stuff on even smaller cars in my country.

By that logic we don't need a lot of things. You don't need nice padded seats - a bucket would work just as well. You don't need paint on your car. You don't need either heat, or air conditioning. You don't need a radio. You don't even really need 4 tires. Or seatbelts. Or airbags. Or windows that open.

But is it better to have all those things? Obviously...

Certainly. I hear a lot of talk locally about how "I need a truck because sometimes I buy a bag of dirt at Home Depot" though.

For such a reason I'd much rather pick a forward-control van, and it's worth notice most of them are narrower than most new cars while not so much longer, too bad they're not so common anymore.

I need an airplane because I sometimes visit my sister who lives in another country.

I need a a backhoe because I sometimes need to dig some dirt behind my house for gardening.

I need a beam-me-up-Scotty transporter from Star Trek because I sometimes like camping out in three middle of nowhere.

Heaven forbid I use my car to actually transport stuff in.

Really though, the sharing economy needs to extend to everything. There shouldn't be anything I can't rent for a reasonable fee. Drives me nuts that I have to spend $12/day to park my car out in BFE at the airport, only to need to rent a car at my destination. Why isn't someone driving my car I left at the airport while I'm driving someone's car at my destination?

Years ago when there were far fewer paved and maintained roads, when snow removal wasn't near as good and when more people lived out in the country most people would go camping regularly in their 2wd station wagons and would boast over how well their sedans drove in the snow.

Now that more roads than ever are paved and well maintained, snow removal it better than ever and the great majority of people now live in the city; now SUV's and pickups are necessary!? Now everyone needs one in case they drive over an unpaved road or if they get a skiff of snow!?

Last summer we drove over Cumberland Pass in the Avalon. Everyone else had pickups, SUV's or even 4 wheelers and other off-road vehicles. They'd look at me like I was crazy. But I don't really understand why. The road was in great shape and we never once scraped bottom. And with the shear dropoff it wasn't like those off-road vehicles were ever going to help those drivers actually drive off the road. I also averaged 60mpg the whole round trip in a big comfy Avalon!
