Typical Murrican Family Spent Over $4000 on fuel in 2011

How about you?

Squeeze at the gas pump: Typical family spent more than $4,000 in ‘11, adding to budget stress - The Washington Post

Haven't figured mine yet but it's closer to $400 than $4000.

Quote:

the typical American household will have spent $4,155 filling up this year, a record. That is 8.4 percent of what the median family takes in, the highest share since 1981.

[...] Gas averaged more than $3.50 a gallon this year, another unfortunate record. And next year isn’t likely to bring relief.

[...] a buck spent on gas has less bang in the economy than, say, a dollar spent at a restaurant. The U.S. is an oil-importing country, so many of the dollars spent on gas ultimately leave the country instead of being invested here in new ventures and jobs.

James Hamilton, an economics professor at the University of California, San Diego, who studies energy prices, estimates that high gasoline prices reduced economic growth by about 0.5 percent for the year — a substantial hit for an economy only growing at an annual rate of about 2 percent.

[...] Hunter Collins ... commutes 40 miles each way to his job in Falmouth. He has started to carpool with a colleague and to take his wife’s more fuel-efficient car to work when it is his turn to drive.

It’s still not enough. He says he’s going to sell his beloved 8-cylinder Dodge Charger. “She’s my baby, but I’m going to have to switch to something more economical,” he says.

Spent this year

$3,149 this year for me going 32,439km.

You only use vehicles as lawn ornaments tho.

Edit: @Frank

morphector 12-19-2011 06:55 PM

We're right in the ballpark of 4000$ for both of us. We're also driving compact car, imagine driving suv !

LOL!

They sure are purdy tho'.

I actually did put a Tempo in the yard and string xmas lights on it... for a day. Shoulda took a pic of it before I undecorated and reparked it.

Started up the snowcat- just in case we get any snow this year. So add $7.50 to my tally for that.

darcane 12-19-2011 08:57 PM

I figure I'm at about $3900 for the year for over 25,000 miles (in all our vehicles).

That's pretty bad except that most of my commuting is in a full size truck...

Fortunately, my new motorcycle should cut that down quite a bit next year.

Same but at 40K+ miles, it could be worse. NOT counting the work van

Let's see, 40K on the brick/15MPG*$3.50=Aaaah, with oil changes call it $10K. Some years it does 50K, so around $12K. That's why getting one used to be considered a $2 raise. Now its closer to $3.

Ryland 12-19-2011 10:28 PM

My fuel cost and vehicle ownership costs come out to around $4,000 for the last three years and that includes buying the car.

user removed 12-19-2011 11:31 PM

Fuel cost is currently about $2400 per year. Wife averages 7-8 gallons a week and mine is about the same unless I ride the bike which cuts mine from 1.3 to .5 gallons a day as an average. Say 600 a year minimum up to maybe 800 depending on the trips we take.

About 3% of our gross income.

Mech

Looks like I've used about $850 worth of gas this year and traveled about 13k miles between the Paseo and Prius.

That is down quite a bit from the $1250 I spent on the Prius last year alone over the 22k miles we put on it (switch jobs).

320touring 12-20-2011 08:03 AM

£2338 on fuel for the iS so far, for 15383 miles.

in your numbers that's $3655 for 10 months...

jakobnev 12-20-2011 08:10 AM

It's $1500 or so, but i pay 7-9$/gal over here. That family would have to sell their organs if they wanted to drive around that much in Europe.

euromodder 12-20-2011 08:45 AM

Pretty ridiculous !

Despite our far higher (double) fuel prices, I've spent 1,922 USD on fuel over the last 12 months - which include the harshest, longest winter in many years.

MetroMPG 12-20-2011 09:26 AM

Spent $209 CAD on gas and ~$9 for electricity to go about 5680 km (3529 mi.) in the fleet this year.

But I'm not typical, Murrican, or a family!

EDIT PS: my cost per mile for insurance (particularly) & maintenance drives me a bit nuts though.

tru 12-20-2011 11:08 AM

well for those under the average there are still those above.

I averaged around $500 a month, and that equals $6,000 for the year

jamesqf 12-20-2011 12:24 PM

Closer to $400 than $4000, though I don't bother to keep track. $20 in the Insight every 3-4 weeks, sometimes longer. Probably a couple hundred in the Toyota pickup the last couple of months, but since most of that was burned hauling firewood that'll replace maybe $2K in heating oil over the next couple of years, I'd call it a win.

Also have to figure that the average includes the neighbor down the road (Mr. Richard Head, as he's known in the neighborhood - we're a formal crowd :-)) who idles his oversized diesel pickup for 15-30 minutes every morning.

sid 12-20-2011 10:13 PM

About $750 so far this year. But I've only driven my truck less than 7000 miles, with another almost 5000 miles on my bicycle.

nemo 12-21-2011 07:57 PM

My car $684 for 5800 miles
Wife's $480 for 3791 miles
Total $1163 for 9951 miles

Short supplies keep gas prices rising in Calif. - Yahoo! News

I wonder what the typical Uhmerican (sorry, spelled it wrong before!) will spend in '12?

The stories about the Cali fuel price spike are immensely entertaining. Either they find the biggest retards to interview and quote for the stories... or most of the people are just that stupid. "Ohhhh, it's over $100 to fill my SUV." "Ohhhh, I'm going to buy gas one gallon at a time." "Ohhhh, I'm going to put on an extra 100 miles driving around looking for a lower price."

As entertaining as the stories are, they pale in comparison to the blog posts, where it is evident that the ratio of posters with functioning brains vs mush is running about 1:100.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. -George Carlin

It's killing our pocketbook. You can't budget for it because you don't know what it's going to be. You just have to put in less. Instead of a half-tank, you put in a quarter-tank.
If people are running their budget so thin that a 70 cent increase in fuel prices ruins them, they were destined for ruin all along.

I save money by purchasing used vehicles from a private party, find the cheapest fuel with the GassBuddy app, and just generally avoid spending money in the first place. For example, I've never bought a bottle of water while in the States.

Weather Spotter 10-06-2012 07:06 AM

my 2012 gas costs have been $915 - free gas with rewards = ~875

redyaris 10-06-2012 12:03 PM

Used 1104 L [292 gal US] fuel, traveled 26,000km [16,160 miles] todate in 2012. At around $1.10/L that is $1214.4/year to date. About 10 months out of 12.
And I drive more than average, mostly Highway, my aim is at less than $1000/year.

Arragonis 10-06-2012 05:10 PM

Total receipt price of my petrol from 1st Oct 2011 to 1st Oct 2012 is £973 which is $1570 USD at today's exchange rate. Mrs A's fuel is 90% company so based on the receip price about £194 is for family use = $313 USD.

So the total is $1883 as a family.

I own no truck, have no incidental need of a truck and therefore do not keep a truck at home for "hauling stuff" or "towing", these are the only cars we own.

euromodder 10-06-2012 05:28 PM

Despite paying 7.663 USD/gallon for gas, I'm still below half the US average at 1924 USD (1 year period); some 15000 miles, and just one car to do them all.

Arragonis 10-07-2012 06:21 AM

Do the figures for fuel include non-transport uses ? For example a lot of murricans use petrol lawn mowers or power tools of some kind but most (here in Blighty anyway) use corded or rechargeable tools and plug in electric mowers.

ksa8907 10-07-2012 09:33 AM

we both drive about 13-14k miles so at 27,000 for both of us, average 24mpg, average of $3.75. around $4200

TheEnemy 10-08-2012 11:58 AM

Somewhere between $1000 and $2000 for my wife and I.

brucey 10-08-2012 12:11 PM

Under 1000$ for 2 cars. Not too bad, closer to my goal of lawn ornaments every day.

wainair 11-06-2012 10:01 AM

$345 and 13000 miles. I don't count the electricity I used because I replaced most of our incandescent bulbs in our house with led's and cfl's so our electricity bill has gone down about $20 per month even with plugging in the Volt.

Ed-in-Maine 11-06-2012 10:28 AM

Year to Date, $1889.77 and have traveled 15906.6 miles. This is split between an 08 matrix and 02 F250. I suspect we'll easily hit $2500 by years end since were driving the truck south next week, we're scared of snow:)

Xist 11-06-2012 10:53 AM

I really try to use public transit, having paid $150 for a semester pass, but I do not think that I was able to use it at all last week, and this week is not looking good, either. I have been studying for three weeks for my anatomy practical today. Perhaps had I studied for my physics test last week I would have scored higher than a 64%.

I do not have high hopes for the practical, though. Shouldn't three weeks of studying be enough?

Anyway, I fill up every other week for about $50, having driven my Forester about 300 miles. I definitely wish that I had something more economical, but having slept in it last drill, it definitely has some merits.

What about Energy Secretary Steven Chu saying that he wanted the US to have the same gas prices as Europe? :D

Phantom 11-06-2012 11:20 AM

Here is what I have for the year.

$2967.51 22485mi Bonneville
$1595 20015mi Golf TDI

$4562.51 42500mi Total

The wife does about 1 tank a month so ~$60*12 =$720

Christopher Jordan 11-06-2012 12:22 PM

Right around $1000. I am embarrased since I use so much coal for charging other vehicles than my car! (hmm; CA. is hydroelectric and nuclear in my area - so never mind! I am no longer embarassed- as the gloat factor sets in... :D)

Pandaf 11-06-2012 05:14 PM

About 430 euro annually for LPG, 50 euro for petrol, 228 euro for road taxes, 200 euro for insurance, 300 euro on maintenance including tyres replacements. About 10-11.000 km per year.

GRU 11-06-2012 07:36 PM

2 years ago between my wife and i, we spent about $5900 (at about $4.80/us gallon)...if we drove the cars we have today, the fuel bill would be half, $2950

wsc01q 11-06-2012 11:50 PM

Spent almost $400 in 2011. Usually get 30 gallons each month at about $1 a gallon using Giant Eagle discount points and a trunk full of gas cans. Drive 2 v6 cars plus a plug-in electric. Yes, we are retired.

greasemonkee 11-07-2012 04:39 AM

For the past 12 months - estimated right at $5000 for my vehicle and 70,000 miles. Darn malfunctioning EGR probably cost me $300 due to having to run 93 octane for 9 of those months. My Co-workers averaging 35 mpg in their stock 4 cylinder cars would have spent $7200

Frank Lee 11-07-2012 05:56 AM

70,000 in one year? Got a sleeper on that thing?

ProDigit 11-07-2012 09:01 PM

I'm at $1440 for cars, and ~$400 for motorcycles/scooters.

I move through traffic with a 63cc scooter, which has 90+MPG's.
My other bike has 80+MPG's when driving 40-45MPH. I'm trying to keep that speed.
My car has an average of 34MPG (42MPG on the highway, 70MPG when driving 35-40MPH in the city).
My other car is a V6, and a gasoline hog. Only used to go to the metro rail station 2 miles away (to and back).

boxchain 11-08-2012 09:42 PM

From my bank statements:

2005 $1450
06 $1145
07 $1050
08 $970 92 Accord -> 98 Civic
09 $700
10 $590
11 $730 with motorcycle
12 $470 (through August)

I drive 125 mi/wk to work, and mostly just park the car on the weekends. There were a few work related 1k mi trips in 08 and 09. Includes a truck used for renovations mainly in 2007-8. Got the bike in 2011, 83 BMW R80, used as occasional commuter and pleasure rider (2500 mi) though it actually gets worse mileage (33-36) than the car (37-41).

Looks like it's taken me 6 years to spend $4500 on fuel. I can't even imagine $4k/yr. It would be nice to have a garage though, but, no space on these old narrow city lots.
