U.S. fleet fuel economy DOWN

Americans' cars getting less fuel efficient, believe it or not - Fortune

HA! That's what I thought. Actually, because 4x4s are so popular in my locale, I figured the decline in fe would be much greater.

Not surprising.

Auto companies sell EVs and Hydrogen cars so they can trump up numbers to sell more crap mobiles.

Go figure.

If the crapmobiles didn't have so many buyers...

45 miles on the Sentra since driving home from the gas station on the last day of April, 5 days ago. A few years back I was easily driving 25-30k a year. MPG is lower but Total Cost of Ownership is much lower than before, probably lower than it has ever been with inflation considered. Rode the bike 10 miles to lunch with the wife today. We walked a mile and a half through colonial Williamsburg.

So, this is from the trend of people moving to larger and less efficient vehicles?

I had been wondering about this:http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1430895608

A 2,015 Forester supposedly gets the same fuel economy as a 1,999 (base) Civic (with an automatic), but most cars are not AWD, so they would not have had the economical disadvantage of a Subaru, and less room for improvement. Still, the Forester improved 35%, while the Civic only increased 22%.

Curiously, the 2,015 has the exact same EPA rating as Chorizo, yet my lifetime is 44 MPG, while I peaked at 27 MPG in Bacon.

Behold the power of the manual transmission!

The reason is obvious:
Historical Gas Price Charts - GasBuddy.com

4-Year low in US gas prices and poor short term memory.

Wow, gas goes down only very recently and this happens. Even though it jumped about 30 cents from before spring.

I was actually surprised, If you look at the reports the fleet of cars that has been sold was getting more efficient for the longest time. This is the first in a few years i think it's gone down. :(

From the article:
Quote:

Average fuel economy for cars sold in April was 25.2 mpg, down .2 mpg from March and down .6 mpg from the high point reached in August of 2014.
And a graph from UMichigan

Per Gasbuddy, gas prices started plummeting... last August. The lowest point was in January, which closes matches UMichigan's low point of December (25.0mpg). That's a pretty strong correlation in my book.

It always cracks me up when I overhear someone (and this has happened more than once mind you) talking about how gas prices are low so they're thinking of getting an SUV.

Yep, smart move there, gas prices will stay this low forever, won't they!? It's not like they've gone up near $5/gallon before or anything.

Me too!

When gas started falling I took the opportunity to buy an Insight for cheap. And then when the gas prices dropped even lower, I bought another one. Even with gas prices this low, it's not like I feel stupid to be trying to save gas, it's still money in the bank.

A year from now let's see how those big gas-guzzling SUVs are working out for for all those guys buying them right now.
