The Ultimate Mpg Guide

I have noticed that hybrid owners do not get as good mpg above Epa as others, and since some numbers might be exaggerated, I thought a
three-way approach would be helpful to car buyers. Here is the first part.

EPA user: average of all user data within model years specified

EM user: average of last 10 updated in the EM garage, except for very popular models, then updated since sept. 1st

Number in Parenthesis: how many different cars averaged

No plugin hybrids included due to mpge not figured in

Good idea! I feel like it would be easier to read in a spreadsheet, though- BBCode isn't kind to columns, unfortunately.

Interesting that some show lower MPG for EM users than EPA users!

I posted the first numbers spaced in columns, but this forum doesn't like spaces :(

And on the EM vs EPA users, you have to remember a lot of the cars in the em garage are 1-time post from people who didn't ecomod or hypermile.

Some reasons hybrid owners might not get as far above EPA as others:

The largest gains to be had are from EoC, which works by running a relatively large engine at high load a short amount of time and leaving it off between pulses, thereby running it at full load as much as possible. With a hybrid, the engine is downsized nearly to the point that it needs to be run at full load just to maintain cruising speed in top gear, and the electric motor provides accelerating and passing power.

Hybrids will have electric power steering and no alternator, which are equivalent to cutting the belts on a traditional car. Pulling the fuse on electric power steering nets very little gain, and electricity generation is much more efficient in a hybrid.

Hybrids employ regenerative braking, which discourages coasting in neutral with the engine off up to a light.

Hybrids shut their engines off when not needed, which also reaches for the same fruit as EoC and/or shutting the engine off at lights.

Hybrids often come from the factory with less low hanging fruit via aerodynamic improvements.

Yeah, hybrids do a lot of the hypermiling for you- there's less inefficiency to improve on.
