universal economy shift light add-in

i have looked all over quiet a few times and have found nothing. so im bringing it to everyones attention and maybe we can get around to making or designing one of these that can maybe even be built buy the consumer. there isnt even a OBD II option :\.

what all signals and info does this need to determine a good shift point for fuel economy? ive discussed it with friends and theyve said a window switch like a normal shift light, but that wont work in the manner it should for a eco shift light. if your always shifting at 2000 rpm under light throttle, your not always going to be at the optimum power to get up a hill and have your economy too. thats a loose loose situation lol.

since im wanting to put this in my Aveo, and the Fiero GT thats getting the L32, 3800 Series III Supercharged, i want to have two lights occupy the shift up light socket. a green LED for fuel economy shift up, and a red LED for performance shift up. these 3800's get in the low 30 MPG's in the five speed Fieros when they are easy on it. apply some ecomodding driving habit, and you can pull off some rediculously good MPG in a supercharged sports car lol.
the performance shift up light can be had pretty cheaply off ebay. now a combination circuit of the two would be pretty neat. too much hassle for something simple like this.

I'm quite interested in this for an AT, but that is more involved. It's a rather complex issue as my engine gives best power for the fuel under high throttle at about 2,800 rpm (according to charts). So you would have to take a lot of factors into consideration.
For me, with my AT. I would like to be able to nearly open it up with out down shifting (some tweaking of the throttle position sensor may suit my needs)

making a light go on under certain specific sensor readings/conditions is the easy part. Identifying peak efficiency universally in random car X is a challenge.

americasfuture2k 08-09-2010 10:43 PM

yea that is true. what all sensor readings does it need? rpm, injector, vss(?), TPS, MAP...

do it like the MPGuino... the user calibrates it them selves according to the cars readings.

ideally you would put the car on a dynomometer and measure speed, consumption, torque and build a 3d map (lots of readings), a-la bsfc chart.

Its a lot more complicated than comparing gallons at refill.

hmm... ill have a chance to get to see all of this when i dyno the fiero for tuning when i complete the swap...

americasfuture2k 08-09-2010 10:56 PM

wouldnt an OBDII unit be more universal?

dcb 08-09-2010 11:03 PM

At the expense of some accuracy, I don't think they pick up on things like enrichment or dfco (or even EOC) universally and assume stoic, and wouldn't even work on your fiero :)

ive got a Series III Supercharged 3800 thats going in and ill be retaining the OBDII computer, so it will be OBDII. more wires... simpler to diagnose. lol thats like an oxy moron.
