Next week: do not touch a hot stovetop element?

redpoint5 05-12-2021 02:10 PM

Do you think even 1 person who was going to fill plastic bags with gasoline read these Tweets and decided not to? Perhaps...

Probably as effective as Tweeting "don't do meth because it's bad for your health".

MetroMPG 05-12-2021 02:15 PM

Tweet author...

"If only one person reads this tweet and decides against filling a plastic bag with gasoline, it was worth it."

... presses submit.

Gasoline Fumes 05-12-2021 03:51 PM

Gas cans are just a scam for idiots who can't think for themselves! Storing a year's worth of extra gasoline isn't rocket science. I've been using the same bags for years, just need to tape up any holes that develop. The filled bags fit nicely on a large shelf above my wood stove.

redpoint5 05-12-2021 04:00 PM

It's the Big Corporate Gas Can Industry lying to us about the merits of their redundant products.

Frank Lee 05-12-2021 04:27 PM

I'll admit to having a gas can with no spout, cap, or vent cap and I found that plastic bags tied around the necks work just fine! True! Just don't fill too high, slosh it too much, or tip it over. Yes, I thought I'd just go buy a replacement spout/cap but they're $15! That's stupid!

Autobahnschleicher 05-12-2021 05:25 PM

We should let nature do its thing...

I say let nature run its course.

freebeard 05-12-2021 07:14 PM

I went with NATO-style cans with the safety clips. Let Darwin have the next guy.

The clamp-on spout lives in the shotgun door pocket.

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 05-12-2021 07:45 PM

I remember when it was not so uncommon for gas stations in my country to sell fuel on a plastic bag specifically made to hold 5 litre of fuel. Nowadays they can't even sell fuel on a regular plastic bottle.

In the one-time Republic of Viet Nam, they had roadside kiosks with rows of glass whiskey bottles refilled with some combustible liquid.

All they needed was some soap flakes and a rag.

Maybe they didn't really need that, at all :D

Soap flakes or rag?

Why would they need both the soap flakes and the rag? To remove whisky leftovers from the bottles? Well, as they were selling "some combustible liquid" not clearly specified, as long as the total alcohol content is kept above 80% it's OK :D

MetroMPG 05-14-2021 09:53 PM

it's real

The soap flakes for a jelling agent. And you wrap the rag around the bottle, not stuffed in the neck.

So that's what's in the anarchist's cookbook. Avoided that forbidden knowledge all these years until now.

freebeard 05-15-2021 02:23 AM

The Anachist's Cookbook was riddled with misinformation.

My post was in that same spirit. Or was it?

Piotrsko 05-15-2021 10:25 AM

Back in the day, the cookbook was the only published semi plausible set of data you could get your hands on. Heck I had access to one in high school, it was common in all the Hermosa Beach hippie bookstores. We also knew that most of their stuff wouldn't work as described.

I took your post for what it was, but couldn't figure how it worked without the rag. Still can't.

redpoint5 05-15-2021 10:31 AM

It isn't lack of knowledge keeping society safe, it's lack of intent to do harm. We don't need a less capable society, we need a better natured and trained society.

oil pan 4 05-17-2021 03:22 AM

It's not okay to fill bags with gasoline unless you are trying to loot and burn a city, then it's fine.

It's the lack of intent from people who know.
I'm not going into detail, but it's great that terrorists aren't usualy the smartest or most knowledgeable people.

I thought it wasn't meant for that. Well, it was still not uncommon for people in the Brazilian Amazon to use fuel smuggled from Venezuela and Colombia, often sold on regular Coke bottles.

What could possibly go wrong?! What kind of bag are we supposed to use anyway?

By the way, this H2 user upgraded his vehicle with 4 gas cans and possibly one or more cigarettes:

Makes me wonder if some sort of flexible Jerry can could be made out of the same rubber compounds of air tubes still fitted to bias-ply tyres (which remain quite common for motorcycles, and for some collector cars in my country).

I filled one of those 300 gallon fuel crates while it was loaded in my truck bed once. Diesel prices at the station happened to be lower than I could get delivered, so I filled up there using their high speed pump (meant for big equipment). It wasn't a fuel shortage; the prices were good and I happened to need more.

I'd like to see those women pick up those 15 gallon totes after filling them too. 6 lbs per gallon adds up quickly.

The hamper would probably hold fuel decently if it were lined with a garbage bag. Sloshing is a mother though.

Milk bags, yup! :D

I once tried to fill a container that wasn't a regulation gas can at a self serve station, and the attendant wouldn't turn on the pump.

I'm guessing that's not a thing any more.

Piotrsko 05-20-2021 10:40 AM

Can't say, except the last year when I last bought gas, for only the lawnmower, I needed to have a new style filler neck, but that only applied to stations with outside attendants. The people at the local cheap chain running the cashier inside couldn't care less about outside

Uh huh huh huh. Can you put it in a cup?

Approved fuel bag (blivet):https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1621524129

Then there are the big ones, tens of thousands, used for fuel farms.

Do you guys remember when a fuel pipeline went down around 2005? Almost everyone panic-bought, but I didn't hear of any of this nonsense.

Everything was fine before I needed to fill up.

freebeard 05-20-2021 01:00 PM

This is why operating the pump should be left to professionals, as in Oregon and (New Jersey?)

redpoint5 05-20-2021 01:36 PM

Somehow our petrol is cheaper in Oregon where they require an attendant than California and Washington where they don't.

Somewhat recently the law changed allowing rural areas to forgo the requirement of an attendant.

Stations have always preferred I fill the motorcycle myself. They don't like being yelled at for splashing on the fuel tank. I can't even recall the last time someone else filled the motorcycle.

Xist 05-20-2021 01:48 PM

Gas is taxed higher in Washington than Oregon?

When we went to the field before deployment a Soldier said that filling up her HMMWV was the scariest thing she had ever done.

She was an MP.

redpoint5 05-20-2021 01:51 PM

Those take diesel, right? Should be nothing scary about that. Weird hearing a soldier saying filling up a vehicle is the scariest thing they have done. She knows the military kills people as their occupation, right?

Xist 05-20-2021 01:55 PM

We make other people die for their countries.

I don't know if they are technically designed for diesel or jet fuel, but I can share a video of a guy trying to light diesel and jet fuel.

It is pretty safe.

Those used to be more usual in my country too, but nowadays I don't see it so often.

Spring is upon us, so I expect to see more of them around.
