US sales forecast for Smart ForTwo revised upward

Looks like sales of Corollas, Fits, Aveos and Yarii aren't the only ones headed upward...

For the second quarter which just ended in June, 7,731 smart fortwos were delivered, raising the year-to-date wholesale delivery total to 12,646 vehicles.

Sales for the little car are expected to remain strong. Amazingly, some 20,000 advance orders were placed in the months of May and June alone, prompting Penske Automotive to raise the sales outlook from around 20K to between 24,000 and 27,500 units in 2008, smart's first year on the U.S. market.
To put the 2008 12,646 smart fortwo sales in perspective, GM sold 37,697 Aveos in the same time, while Toyota sold 73,300 Yarii.

GM still sold more Hummers YTD (18,035 - all models), beating smart sales.

That's great to hear. I hope the ForTwo stays around long enough for a second generation.

I'm not too concerned about the sales of Hummers since that includes all models. I bet the majority of those were H3's.

I don't mean to be a poo poo, but I don't think the Smart is all it's cracked up to be.... I would think that over 15 years later a 3 cyl. would get at LEAST the EPA MPG as a Metro XFI. I am hopeful, but unimpressed.

I live in a recreational area and am waiting to see a Hummer with a Smart for Two in toe. I love it when I see an 35 foot RV with a moped in a rack hauling a Jeep with a bike rack on the back. I'ts like they confused about who the want to impress, the conspicuios consumers, the ecomodders or the Sierra Club

Don't forget, Will, the smart has 50% more hp than the XFi had. If they would simply offer it with a true manual transmission, it would be possible to get decent mileage out of it.

atomicradish: that IS the 2nd gen car. The rest of the world (including Canada) had the 1st gen fortwo. And you're right - the vast majority of the Hummer sales were H3's.

the problem is they should put one in front other behind greatly reducing wind resistance.

The Fortwo is a real underachiever in my humble opinion. The Metro and the TDI are way better mpg'ers.

My whole thing is that I think, in the year 2008, we should be able to do better.

Saw my first Smart for Two up close at a local GM dealership yesterday. $21,999, 35 city, 40 highway. Premium gas only. Really not that impressive. Across the street at the Toyota dealership was a new Yaris 13,999, 40 highway, two extra seats, better looking and runs on regular. No contest, The Yaris wins.
