Versa Basic, what do you think?
I'm looking at replacing the old Toyota pickup. The Versa Basic looks like it is set up for decent hypermiling. It has no unnecessary power stuff like windows, locks, etc. There is no AC, which is OK with me because my current vehicle doesn't have it either and I live up north. It is relatively lightweight. The motor is 1.6 liter which is still bigger than the mighty Metro 1.0 but at least its a little smaller than the stock 1.8. There is no cruise control which is a big minus for me. The front end looks pretty easy to block the grill openings and add an air dam. The wheels are 14" which makes the vehicle lower to the ground. It is a five speed manual which is just what I need for EOC, although a 6 speed would be better. The price is right. I am looking at a job that I will need to commute 40 miles each way. The Toyota pickup is pretty bouncy and is getting old.
I'm just looking for some comments before I go out and try to get prices on this thing. |

I'm not sure how long I can wait...
Kind of wanted to see what the new Ford Fiesta was going to be like in 2011 too. But if I gets the job I needs the transport. |
92-95 Civic VX? Has the airbags and such, but without the cost of a full-blown car. I think that with the changes coming in the next 2 years, it would be crazy to buy a new car right now.

I'm sure the Versa isn't a bad car. But, there are better options IMO. I'd really be looking for a Civic HX if I was looking to replace something of mine.

Hi,
I would strongly prefer the 2009 Honda Fit. The Versa rear seat doesn't fold flat; while the Fit's rear seat is amazing. The basic aerodynamics of the Fit is better, and I think it weighs less, as well. Also, the new Honda Insight is coming this Spring. |
maybe get an older civic to hold you over for a year or so till the new aseomeness comes out.

Looking long term a Versa Basic will hurt resale vs the Yaris because it lacks ABS and A/C. However, if you plan on buying it and running it until it dies than you will definitely get a better deal on the Basic vs a Yaris. MSRP is more than $2K less vs Yaris. If you can actually FIND a Basic it's hard to beat the value if you don't mind giving up the extras.

If you're "handy", there are aftermarket cruise control kits that can be added to most cars...
