What happens if I remove the cone within the intake hose of my 1991 2.3L Ford Tempo
 

What happens if I remove the cone within the intake hose of my 1991 2.3L Ford Tempo GL? It has a HSC engine. Does the cone create a swirl in the air which the High Swirl Combustion engine needs? Or is it a silencer that I can remove to gain HP and fuel economy? I know these were lemons but it has no rust, was always garaged and has 130K KILOMETERS on it. See my sketch of it below... It appears to be a silencer. Have you checked around on the Tempo forums?

I would say that it does not have anything to do with creating swirl. If so, then the Tornado device would work. It is pure nonsense :rolleyes:

Thanks for the fast response! I only ask because I have to cut it off the hosing and can't put it back after. If I remove that should I see some sort of gain in fuel economy with the same driving habits?

Thanks for the quick response! It has a couple of dings but gets the job done for me and what I do. It did have some rust when I got it but I got an angle grinder out and POR15 and cut all the rust out and fiberglassed patches in. Will post pictures when I have more than five posts LOL.


I take it removing the silencer will increase air flow and should allow for better fuel economy provided driving habits stay the same?

You take it wrong, unless you drive at WOT all the time. :/

The throttle at anything less than WOT restricts air flow, because it has to, or else you'd have a runaway engine.

If you are driving for economy you aren't at WOT in the first place.

The only thing you will notice upon removal of the cone- or most any intake alteration- is more noise.

If you don't believe it, and it is an easily removeable/replaceable part, go ahead and test it. Search for the very helpful "conducting a proper a-b-a test" thread on this site.

I don't know why you feel the need to apologize for your car. If you really think it's a lemon, drive it into a lake.

Thanks for the response, apology retracted... Though driving it into a lake would be fun if I was drunk but on second thought not very ECO frendly....

So In essence the effect of this mod would be a noisier more muscley sounding ford tempo, a possible fixit ticket, but possibly better acceleration when going onto the highway?

I do plan on trying it, what should I use to fabricate replacement tubing? PVC? Dryer ducting? I don't want to destroy the original part and the wreckers are far away from where I live.

I will fill my tank up at the station start my test on the highway using cruise control at night and give that thread a read before doing so. Thanks again for the time and advice.

If you make a habit of WOT acceleration you are definitely not driving for efficiency.

Beware of the placebo effect; oftentimes people equate noise to more work being done (that is why vacuum cleaners can't be too quiet).

Knowing what I know, I wouldn't putz with it or even waste any more time dreaming about it.

All I can say is, in the Mustang world (obviously another Ford product) removing the silencer is good for 2hp on up depending on throttle levels, mods to the car, etc. WOT isn't needed. Ford likes to restrict even partial throttle in the name of silence, for some reason.

You are not looking at a significant amount of noise. It really is hardly noticeable.

I didn't notice any change when I removed mine from my Mustang.
