Will autonomous cars race to stop light?
 

Driving for rideshare and coasting, I've gotten complaints from riders that I was high or drive too slow to get more money. No honey, I could try but it won't make a difference at $0.1/min for your 8min ride.

I believe fully autonomous driving (as well as full EVs) still has ways to go (10+ years) before it becomes mainstream nationwide but once they do, will they integrate traffic light information with each vehicle or at least vehicles in each block between traffic lights to maximize coasting?

If they do, will people complain? If they don't, aren't they wasting literal metric billions, trillions of joules of energy? Do the autonomous vehicle engineers even care about these at this point or are they too busy trying not to hit another pedestrian?

The thing that came to mind was a coworker who approached me one day and said they were flaming mad at me for accelerating so slowly on a freeway onramp. I knew the traffic pattern on this road and knew that everyone slams on their brakes when the lanes merged, so I simply didn't race to the pinch point.

Another thing that comes to mind is the time I experimented with Portland gridlock and drove the average speed of traffic rather than bumper to bumper. In 1 hour of allowing a gap to form when traffic moved faster, and closing the gap as it slowed down, a total of 14 cars occupied the gap I left open. That may have extended my 1 hour drive by 20 seconds, but at least everyone behind me was getting excellent fuel economy.

If someone accused me of being high, I'd reply that at least I wasn't retarded. I don't care the opinion of dumb people.

I hear that it chimes when the light is about to turn green. Unfortunately, I want to get a Pinephone smartphone but it runs Linux.

If it uses GPS to know that it's in stop light centeraland not to be in too much of a rush.
The cool version would use gps and 1 way communication from the plc or scata network so it knows what the next stop light is about to do.

That is really cool and if I can have it integrated in Google Maps (I just happen to use it most frequently) I bet I can hit 30MPG city with my car lol.

But for most people (human driven cars) I just know that they will use it to speed past the last few seconds of green light instead of coasting and slowing down. Kind of like arcade racing games where you have to pass checkpoints with the timer ticking down lol. Because I have little faith that people will look beyond the next 1 set of light with or without the assistance...

Didn't click the link, but the way it's named I expect it's a long description in the form my company often presents in their documentation. A document will reference an entire 200 page document for instruction without mentioning which part of the document is applicable. Within that document, it will reference another 200 page document, also not mentioning which parts are applicable.

In other words, is there a concise point that can be spelled out?

Cities that are willing to open source their timing data get fine-grained data they couldn't get with rubber hoses.

Commuters get the shortest possible commute time. The route planned is predictive. You can see one or two lights ahead, but the app can game all possible routes.

I certainly never would have derived that level of analysis from reading about SCADA.

It always amazed me that they still drag those rubber traffic counters out when most every light has a way to detect traffic. Even if it isn't that easy, governments could probably get higher res data for lower cost by paying Google.
