You guys are the smartest people that I know! :)

I need to look into being tested for ADD for a third time. When I called for the results the first time I was told that I did not complete the test. I would think that if I pay to take a test they should make sure that I did it right.

The second time I was told that I fit Asperger's more than ADD, but I honestly think that I have both.

Yay.

Four hundred and thirty-five of us took an anatomy test on Tuesday. I finished first with an eighty-three. People assume that I would score higher if I took my time.

I would score higher if I studied more.

I usually pay more attention when I go quickly.

I earned a Bachelor's in Spanish, could not find a job, and ended up in Germany with the Army. They always told us that our service was need-to-know and told us of bad things that happened to our brethren. I seemed to be the only one that followed that policy, as usual. I only mention it now because I think that it is relevant. In the Army everything needed to be done before the order is given.

I came home the end of March and did not see any option other than trying to fit a semester of classes in one summer. It took me eight years to earn a Bachelor's and the only semester that I completed twelve credits was my easiest one. If I completed those classes well enough I could have started my program this semester. Now I am repeating two classes and do not have any idea what I will do until the program starts again next August.

I have an anatomy lab practical next Tuesday. I earned a 33% the first time. If I do not pass this time something will seriously be wrong, but if I do not earn a 3.8 this degree I will not be able to get into my program.

How would you recommend putting my Ecomodder subscriptions on hold? I plan on having my best friend change my World of Warcraft password. I need to figure out how to actually be efficient for eight days.

What suggestions do you guys have?

Nevyn 09-24-2012 12:37 PM

Have a mod put your account on a temporary "suspension" on all the forums you frequent. That'll prevent you from getting anywhere. :)

Piwoslaw 09-24-2012 02:39 PM

I can ban you (Yes, I'm a moderator).
For a week. Forever. Whatever you wish.

Or we can pick a fight with each other and both of us will get banned. Maybe we can pull someone else into the fight, too;)

2000neon 09-24-2012 03:18 PM

I'll get into that fight, can we get a fourth? ;)

I know that everyone is different and learns in different ways, but for me when I did anatomy last year was all about repetition and making the information more than just words/ pictures on a page. The best secret to anatomy is you get the ultimate cheat sheet, YOU! When I was doing bones, muscles, nerves, etc, I would locate them on myself and say them outloud and in my head, while going over origins/ insertions/ innervation. When it came time to do my final, I had a much easier time remembering the names of the muscles because I was able to write my exam the exact same way I studied. Being able to see, feel, flex a muscle helped me memorize it, instead of just seeing it in a book.

I am in my third year of Honours Health Science and did anatomy last year, and that is what helped me get by. It may be worth a try, good luck and let us know how it goes!

Xist 09-27-2012 04:13 PM

Interestingly, the specific subscription rules of Ecomodder have helped me--I was not allowed to create an account using Hotmail or Y!. I cannot really explain it, but I have three accounts among those two providers and three Gmail accounts--two for school and one personal that I only used for this site.

So I simply closed the tab. :D

2000neon, I will try that, thanks!

Piwoslaw, your idea definitely sounds fun. Maybe another time. :)

I had a Physics test this morning. I tried studying, but I had all kinds of complications come up in my life. I ended up paying $200 to replace a cell phone that seemed to be attempting a premature robot uprising.

Today I learned how to unlock $15 Walmart pre-paid phones.

Blast.

I tried studying for physics, but everything that I found in the book was easy. I think that I figured out the last problem, which should have been worth many points, although that was not specified. However, I miscalculated the gravity on Mars, and I probably used the prescribed format wrong.

Example: In our quiz last week we had the problem "A 7-Newton book is sitting on top of another book [...] How much force is Book One exerting on Book Two and in which direction?"

7N, straight down.

Done.

No, I needed to explain it with a diagram, a short essay, and hand puppets.

4/10, but I had the correct answer.

Honestly, though, all that really matters is:

I finished first!

I stop worrying about tests once I stop working on them. As soon as I turn it in I lose capacity to do anything about it.

I stop caring, too.

Sooner or later I will post about something that happened to my car, but I need to get to class. You guys take care!

2000neon 09-27-2012 04:58 PM

I know what you mean about not enough details in answers, during my first year that happened to me to. Now I use as much detail as possible, even something that is simple and seems lime common sense, I don't take any chances.

It's amazing how much stress you can save by not stressing about what you can't change. As you said, once you hand in a test, there is no need worrying about. I just take note of what I didn't know and begin to study it more for the next exam.

Keep up at it, I'm sure you already know that determination and perseverance are the biggest factors.

Now I have to get going soon too, class from 7-10 tonight.

I did the same recently, I found the time and the debates I was watching here took a lot of my time, and I got too obsessed. So I went away for a while. Just close your browser, delete the shortcuts and remove your email address or change it to something that is invalid (as the mods did with me).

Then come back when you are done.

I just want to say that when I saw your title that "You guys are the smartest people I know", my thought was:

That may be more of a reflection on the people you know than it is on Ecommoder:D

YeahPete 10-12-2012 12:08 PM

I recommend spending your time putting your notes in class into Audio and listening to them. Definitions and all. Listen to it ALL the time. Go for long walks and LISTEN to them.

Take yourself AWAY from the distractions. Do not study at home. Go to library and bring food. I highly recommend the audio.

Uninstall WOW. If you want to do something great in real life you must stop wasting time in the virtual life which gets you nowhere in real life.

Ha!

I have not been very good at staying focused. I just spent my third weekend in a row studying for an anatomy practical this Tuesday. I kept getting on my computer to look up something and thinking that I was probably not going to find it on Facebook.

Whatever it was...

I finally put my computer to sleep, and then my next flashcard seemed incorrect, so I got back on the computer...

It is interesting to try to catch up quickly.

Arragonis, welcome back! I was always a little sad to see posts from someone that had left.

All right, I need to go hide for another while. You guys take care!

Well, grades are in: B in Physics, B in Anatomy, and a B+ in Introduction to Human Communication Disorders. I spent most of my time trying to study for Anatomy, but I realized at the end that I did everything [well, many things wrong] with the first two classes. I honestly do not know what I could have done with Miscommunication. Each week we needed to read a chapter and watch a "tutorial." Then we had half an hour to take a ten-question quiz. I usually missed one question, but there were usually at least a few questions that I could not find in the book and did not remember from the tutorial. Once or twice I took notes on everything and did not seem to need them, but that might have been because I remembered everything better because I took notes.

When I first started college I had a terrible time taking notes. When the professor said something that I thought that I should write down, I could not remember the idea long enough to write it, and then I missed the next few things that he or she said, so for most of my time in college, I just tried to pay attention and hoped to remember. That is what I did in Physics and I earned a B. Had I taken notes, I would have had an A.

The textbook is "condensed" and there was a consensus among the students that it was irrelevant to the class. It just did not explain what I did not understand.

Shortly before I graduated the first time I bought my original laptop and was able to type up notes. I had one professor tell me to put away my computer. I think that it was a different professor that stood behind me for an entire class while I typed every useless thing that she said.

That was the only class that I failed. It was never offered again.

Of course, I could not type up notes in Physics. I really try to avoid using paper, so I only brought my notepad when I specifically thought that I would need it. I did not realize until the end that I needed it every Physics class and that while it irritated me that my professor wrote on an overhead, I realized at the end that if he wrote it, so could I.

In Anatomy we needed to correctly answer about 143 (actual number!) on-line questions for each chapter that we covered. I would go over her notes, read the chapter, and guess on almost everything. Since I did not know it, I would write down the question and answer, instead of looking for the answer in the textbook.

That would have saved me hours on every single chapter.

I earned a 3.09 for the semester, but need a 3.7 to apply for the Master's program. Unfortunately, my cumulative GPA still shows the 2.97 from my first Bachelors (now a 2.98!). If I earn straight As until graduation, I will have a 3.76 for these classes, but a cumulative 3.23.

I had looked forward to finally playing World of Warcraft over break, but I had really felt that I needed to read my new textbooks. I read a chapter before going to bed at 8pm.

Most.
Exciting.
Friday.
Night.
Ever.

I actually earned a B+ in what I call "Miscommunication."

Interesting idea. It reminds me of the joke about a kid studying psychology, so his dad asked if he could analyze the family members.

"I am taking Psychology, not Abnormal Psychology."

Psychiatrists only know something about rats, apes, and students :p

Xist 12-27-2012 03:32 PM

Normal people must be an invention of very boring people. :)

a8ksh4 12-27-2012 04:02 PM

I never got really good at taking notes in college, either. My handwriting has always been bad, except for numbers and equations, and I started taking notes on my computer in 2000 when I was in high school. That was good, as I can type fast and never had to miss anything, but I never went back and read any of them again, either. :P

Here are a couple ideas I have for you:

In your math and science classes, what you might try doing is to create programs that handle all of the equations and concepts that you have to use in the class. This is how I originally learned programming and it's how I was able to engage my brain to make sure I understood everything that we did in class. Since the TI calculators are usually allowed everywhere, they're a good platform to use for this.

In other classes where you have trouble taking notes and getting everything that's said, see if you can get copies of notes from a classmate. Tell your instructor(s) that you're having a prob following along and taking notes, and they should be able to help coordinate this.

+1 for going to the library to do homework. Get rid of the distractions!

Xist 12-27-2012 06:23 PM

Sadly, it is difficult to find a quiet spot in the library. When I was earning my first Bachelors, I had such a difficult time focusing in the computing commons, I kept hearing flip-flops hitting tiles, kids talking on cell phones, etc, that I would not be able to make much progress until everyone left, so I started taking a nap after work and then going back to school at 11pm, doing schoolwork through the night, and then leaving for work at five.

We will see how my classes go from here on. A friend taught me some programming in 1989 and I tried taking C++ twice in college--first at my university, then at the community college. I guess that the first time was my fault, I did not take the lab seriously, but I never understood the lecture. However, at the community college it seemed so easy that I wished that I could write my programs during class. However, there came a point when my programs would not run, my instructor refused to help me, my friends couldn't, and I did not have any idea where to find help.

If your program did not run you automatically lost 50% and I had that problem with all of my programs, including the final. I again asked the teacher for help, reminding her that she would not help me before, she said that she couldn't, so I just walked out.

When I was in Afghanistan I got back into the ancient game of Tradewars 2002. I had difficulty explaining why I played a text game, but I think that much of my interest was in writing scripts. Unfortunately, the language was specific to the game. You could use Java, but everyone said that it was way more difficult, and that a TWX script would always be much faster.

I enjoyed figuring out how to make scripts do what I wanted, but if I tried editing an old script, sometimes it was too complex to understand--even though I had written it!

I did use comments. Oh well.

Xist 03-20-2013 01:17 PM

A few weeks ago, I went to the VA, but I need to make many more trips, and I never feel that I have time. I need to get tested for ADD (again) (and for everything else), do a sleep study, and who knows what else.

It seems like just a month or two ago that I would read all of my notifications, go through all of the recent posts, and then wonder what to do with my life, but now I feel buried. I guess that Y! and HoTMailL are considered "disposable" accounts, so I finally had a use for my old gmail account. Then, when I felt that I was spending too much time in the forums, I simply closed the tab, and did not open it again for a while.

The problem is that when I try to catch up, it takes me to the last message, so I need to figure out what I last read. Then I usually have more notification for the same thread. After Spring Break, I had over a hundred, and I finally caught up last night, but I just have too much schoolwork to try to keep up, so I will be closing my Gmail tab again.

I will miss you guys, you are weird, but are good people! :)

...in statistics, "normal" is just the mid-point between the high(bright) end and low(dumb) ends of a bell-curve continuum. However, if you visualize that bell-curve continuum as being a circle, then the high end and low end are actually the same point--on the other (back) side of the circle--and that makes bright=dumb, so normal really is the 'norm' of the normal, in a mathematical sense (wink, wink)!

Come back when you can. I still play the 1987 version of Pirates which requires me to use DOS to play the game.
Sid Meier and Grant Irani, Microprose game from 26 years ago. I think I first played it on a Commodore 64.

Xist 04-03-2013 12:38 PM

I have played some good games by Sid Meier. In 1995 I received a free copy of a magazine that came with a CD, which was the premise for the magazine. It included demos of the programs mentioned in the issue, including Ascendancy, by Logic Factory. There was a minor hack to play after the trial number of turns, but you still could not do other things. Once I finally had a CD-ROM, I started trying to find the full version, and then happened to see it at my supermarket.

I do not know how many games I played, but I went back time and again. There were two problems: The game required micromanagement and if you could have three hundred planets and one hundred ships, keeping track of them was overwhelming. You could automate the planets, but then you run into the second problem: The AI was stupid!

Right now I am playing Tradewars 2002. Most of the game involves telling it which script to run, so it does not involve much user interaction.

In other news, I found a room for rent five blocks from my classrooms for a couple hundred less than I pay for my furnished, month-to-month apartment, so I am going to try to move.

Dosbox is your friend. It even allows you to slow the modern PC down to 1980s-90s speeds.

Can I use it to slow down someone else's computer or just the one window? :)

I remember being able to customize the CPU timing in the BIOS. You could not speed up your processor, just make it slower, like the old Turbo XTs, I guess.

Well, I guess that this is the extent of my weekend festivities. My best friend left the state and I do not have any pressing schoolwork. I kind of just want to go to the movies with a buddy and talk--or not talk.

I guess that I will study for some future test. There are always those.

Xist 09-05-2013 02:45 PM

Xist's log, supplemental.

My parents kept asking me to drive up and help around the house after annual training. I was frustrated that I was away from home for a few weeks and my parents wanted me to immediately leave again, but I enjoyed helping them. I tried to take care of things, I finally returned to the VA, although I did not have any idea where I had left off, so I could not really pick up. I was told to get my blood drawn in the ER to see if I had diabetes. The Physician's Assistant told me that my blood sugar was right where we wanted it after a twelve-hour fast.

Of course, I had not been told to fast. I told her that I had eaten breakfast, lunch, and drank a couple of quarts of Gatorade. She did an about-face, came back, and told me to go to the lab the next day, where they drew more blood, and when I was back in-town, I picked several pages of codes and numbers.

Ah, okay. Thanks!

One of my friends, who was a medic, and currently works in a clinic, looked at the paperwork, and told me that I was in excellent health.

Thanks! A lot of help you are!

So, allegedly not diabetic or hypoglycemic, which the PA had suggested.

I talked to a psychiatrist and an MD. The latter gave me some prescriptions, one for "mood," which is supposed to help my focus and\or memory in 4-6 weeks, and the other is for "itchiness," which is supposed to help me sleep.

Of course, I have not seen any results from the first medication yet. I tried the second one once and just went back to melatonin and Zzzquil.

School is not starting out well. I missed the first two days and I simply feel lost, but that might have something to do with one class having another as a pre-requisite, and a third class having the course in which I earned a "D" as a pre-requisite. Now that I have my computer situation mostly figured out, I take my 18" brand-new laptop to class, because it is the world's largest audio recorder.

Hmm...

I do not take notes, I try to listen to the professor and hope to remember. I do not know how much good it has ever done me, but this is the first time that I cannot find study material for these classes, not that those were good students, or what worked for them would work for me.

It does not take me that long to do six sets of push-ups (and five sets of sit-ups) or run, but it takes me so long to cool down, stop sweating, and feel like my brain is somewhat useful again, and I keep discussing how to improve my run.

I feel like I am more focused on that than on school!

I do not know how much good it will do, but I need to type up my recordings. I have only done one reading. I quickly wondered whether my summer was too long or too short--I was completely out of practice reading a textbook, but had not necessarily had a sufficient break!

My college (Speech and Hearing Sciences) asked students to participate in a study, which was worth 3% of my semester grade in extra credit. They are comparing the memory of Veterans to civilians and honestly, I think that I did fairly well, but the lady is going to request approval to bring me back for further testing, and try to get assistance through ASU.

When some of my professors announced that notetakers were needed, I asked each of them if I could access the notes, but since I do not have an official diagnosis, it seems like I am at an impasse until I can get one. I planned on contacting both my university and the VA to see about ADHD testing (for the third time!).

However... talking with the extra credit lady (a research scientist), she said that in order for the VA to give me a prescription, I need a diagnosis!

I do admit that much of it comes down to time management and while I can easily waste all day surfing the web, the Internet does not intentionally and maliciously attempt to ruin my life.

Girls, however, well, how in the world would I know what they are doing or what they want?! All that I know is that several times, one of them has persuaded me to allow them to visit "quickly" the night before a test. I enjoy their company, so I have difficulty asking them to leave after fifteen minutes, but the only thing that seems to matter to them is whatever they feel a relationship is, while I have a completely different idea, which includes intelligent conversation, and I just feel that they are selfish.

Meanwhile, I allow them to distract me from school.

I do not know how much better this is, but I have all but ignored the girls who want to talk to me forever, then come over and do whatever stupid cute couple stuff forever, etc.

To be honest, I really feel that I should have broken up with each of them months ago.

Well, I have almost finished my oat bag--muesli! I need to get to school and learn something or whatever.

Please enjoy your days!

well, 3 actually.

I had my first test this semester a couple of hours ago. It was... exciting.

During summer school, I had a very difficult time taking notes during lecture, so once again, I tried to pay attention and hoped to remember.

Summer school went poorly.

Thinking that I would still have difficulty taking notes, I continued to try to pay attention and hoped to remember, but I recorded lectures on my laptop.

Apparently, my laptop does that as well as I pay attention.

Also, when the professors asked for notetakers, I asked if I could have access to those, but that ended when they realized that I had not gone through the Disability Department. I cannot, I do not have an actual diagnosis, although the VA gave me a prescription, so hopefully I can use whatever diagnosis they gave me.

The study guide for today's test was based on the notes that I did not take. I asked my friend about it, they just shrugged, so I started finding stuff through the Internet. After a little while, I found a large set of flashcard made by a girl who had attended my school, so I used that for the rest of my study guide, sent it to my friends, and they used it, providing a few corrections.

I made my own on-line flashcards and spent several hours today studying, but it seemed fruitless, so I rewrote my notes a couple of time.

I only felt that I knew the answers to a fraction of the questions.

People tell me all kinds of things, but I put a lot of time into studying. I mostly ignored girls. They have been a huge distraction in the past.

This really does not seem to be working for me.

Xist 10-04-2013 03:01 AM

I scored a 58.5 on that test. Six days later, I had a test in another class, and instead of providing a study guide, the professor gave us a full review. Professors often post incomplete notes, requiring us to fill in key portions, but this one posts everything. I opened up the review and made flash cards. A hundred and twenty-seven of them.

The previous test only had seventy.

I studied for a few days, did not feel like I was getting anywhere, so I removed key words from the review and made 212 flashcards.

I scored 82% on the questions that I answered, but 0% on those that I did not. People always insist that I need to try, I need to write something.

For the final for my Anatomy lab, I wrote "I love you" when I did not have any idea of the answer.

Apparently, that was not a valid response.

I just hope that a woman graded it...

Anyway, I scored a 64% on that test. On the other one, I was the only student to fail, out of more than seventy. On this one, only one student failed, but it wasn't me!

I had another test. The professor does not really provide notes or a study guide, just an outline of the notes. I have only spoken to two girls in that class and both are retaking it. One told me to learn the outlines. I made fill-in-the-blank flashcards for those--233. We do not have any idea when those grades will be posted.

I was told that I should benefit from my medicine after 4-6 weeks. It has been seven. I will ask my sister, a nurse, how long I should wait before asking for a stronger dosage. However, I was able to get special accommodations. They kept offering extended test times, but I am always the first to finish. They did sign me up for notetakers. So far, I have two, and their notes are beautiful. Hopefully I can get the other two.

It is frustrating, for my second class today, all that I brought was my audio recorder, and I made sure that this girl could not sit in front of me:https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...24425165_n.jpg
She only interrupted her car shopping for text messaging. Also, she never pushes in her chair, so I need to, in order to leave.

With nothing to distract me, I could not tell you what she covered in class, but I have the recording!

Studying is a very slow process. I wish that I knew why I cannot commit things to memory faster. I earned a B in Anatomy! Why can't I memorize things one year later?

I hope that everything is going well for you guys. Take care!

That's four post in a row, man. But you're closing in on 2K views so there's that.

What kinds of cars was she shopping for?

She bought a Chevy Traverse, the same oversized waste that my sister drives, just newer.

Four posts in a row because nobody cares! :D

I just had two tests following a three-day drill. I doubt that I did especially well, but I should do okay. That girl hardly attends that class anymore, which suits me.

Somehow I am having the most difficulty with that class--probably because it is the only one where I do not have a notetaker. I do not have any more tests until finals, the ninth through twelfth, and since I have four in four days, immediately following drill, I am going to start studying now!

I just do not have any idea what to do for this class. The professor told those of us that earned Ds and Fs on the first test to come to her office to go over the test. She just asked me how I expected to get through grad school, but said that reading the textbook would be critical for the second test.

Having taken it, I really do not know how much good it did me to read the three chapters twice each, but it sure took a while!

So, I do not know how relevant the remaining chapters would be. At least for the class for which I just took a test I know how to study. The professor gives section outlines and his tests very closely resemble those, so I just need to memorize each one as he posts them.

I failed the first test of the semester. The professor recommended that I started studying for it immediately, but I procrastinated until I had completed the tests for other classes. She asked me to send her my study materials, but each time that I finished one and started going over it, I did not feel that it would help me, so I started something else, and did not finish until a few hours before the test. However, each one was the same material presented differently, so she could have corrected errors on the first one. Also, her TA gave a study session, and I thought that I would be better off continuing to study my materials, but I had some holes, which she could have filled.
