The bicycle pickup should work, I think CoyoteX did that to one of his motorcycles.

But you can still monitor fuel consumption without a vss too. If you are a regular commuter, you can still "beat your high score" by noting how much fuel it takes to get from home to work and comparing it to yesterdays "score". And you can use the odometer and a scratchpad to keep track of mileage for an arbitrary trip too, and compare it to the fuel used.
