Pizza Pans provide 4.4% FE Increase (@70 mph) ABA Test
So I went out to walmart and bought 16" pizza pans and bolted them to some wheel covers I got from Autozone (for free because one was cracked!)
Decided to do proper ABA testing to se what kind of improvement they would yeild. I'm very pleased with the results!
My test "track" was a section of I-64 east of Richmond in the middle of the day with little traffic. IAT was between 92 and 98 degrees for the entire test which took place from 1:30p at the start to 2:45p finish. Windows were up and the A/C and radio off for consistency.
Each run was a segment 2mi up, turned around and test for a segment of the same 2mi on the return. Mile markers 198-200 and then 200-198.
Results at 70mph: (side note: I NEVER go 70mph in my car, but thought that a higher rate of speed would show the aerodynamic effect more significantly)
(Without)
A1- 36.0/40.8=38.40mpg avg
A2- 36.5/40.2=38.35mpg avg
A3- 38.5/39.7=39.10mpg avg
Total AVG= 38.62mpg
(With)
B1- 39.0/41.8=40.40mpg avg
B2- 38.5/41.6=40.05mpg avg
B3- 38.8/43.9=41.35mpg avg
Total AVG= 40.60mpg
(Without)
A1- 36.6/40.6=38.6mpg avg
A2- 37.6/40.4=39.0mpg avg
Total AVG= 38.8mpg
I'm using the higher of the A runs (38.8mpg) to figure against the AVG of the B runs to get the final result of a 4.43% increase in FE...
Not bad for a $20 modification.

Thanks for posting this!
Was the comparison against a "naked" steel wheel?
Got a photo?

I'm sorry I didn't specify... the "without" tests were just the steel wheel. I'll post pictures when I can. I haven't downloaded them from my camera yet.

This makes me think of the tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands? millions?) of cars that drive around all winter with their naked steelies (for the winter tires).
Think of the collective amount of fuel wasted!

Any chance you could test at 55mph?

You could extrapolate the effect at 55 mph using the aero & RR tool, if you know the vehicle's stats (which are available out there for this car).
Aerodynamic & rolling resistance, power & MPG calculator - EcoModder.com
(Knowing how much time it takes to do good testing, I know I wouldn't be willing to do another set!)
