We’ve probably all heard for a while about new materials to replace steel in cars for lighter weight, increased safety, and reducing manufacturing costs. Well, according to Wardsauto.com, Sabic Innovative Plastics and Azdel Inc. has come up with a new composite material that can replace steel for certain items in vehicles. This composite boasts quite a few advantages over steel:
- 50% lighter
- Greater resistance to damage
- Reduces tooling costs
- Can reduce noise, vibration, and harshness levels
This new matieral is also recyclable, and has been used in a few upcoming prototypes such as the Chevy Volt and Hyundai QarmaQ. So, it sounds like quite the material to design with. Lets start seeing it in more production vehicles now.
