Around town you have to use a lot of finesse in a regular gasser (i.e. EOC and have a stick shift) to compete with the hybrids. I enjoy beating the pants off of hybrids on MPG, so I know it is entirely possible, but I do have to "work" for it.
Hybrids don't buy you much on the hiway. But they do bring electric motors and batteries into the mainstream, so I'm not complaining too much.
