Big rigs are ideal candidates for hybrid power. They tend to either stop-and-go a lot (local rigs) or idle all night (over-the-road sleepers.) They already have to have exhaust brakes because there's no compression braking to speak of. And, like the article said, that Peterbilt saves $9,000 a year in fuel. (My family doesn't even SPEND $9,000 a year in fuel.)

yeah iam happy they are.....the company i work for has i work say 50%local/50%OTR and the fuel bill is 5.1million a year (thats doscounted too) compression brakes aka jake brakes save alotta fuel and brake wear. wanna good laugh i spent about close to 5,000 last year for one car! just in fuel.....i need to make my car as eco as possible!

I don't know how I feel about Diesel hybrids replacing gassers....

I think if you have a diesel use it. Converting to diesel puts an increased load on the demand for diesel and dampens the load on the more common and cheaper(via mass production) gasoline. also with GDI, and lean burn for cars the FE difference is negligible.

Gas is also almost always in supply whereas I have seen stations run out of diesel more often than gas.

well iam not saying to replace gas because it would take years to switch our system of production of (one barrel of oil 50%gas/25%diesel/25% other) where europe is backwards...but give people a choice between hybrids....a lot of people are still uneducated about diesels and still think we are in the days of "dirty diesels". i mean theres no point of switching everything because lets face it new technologies like fuel cells are going to take over and replace our polluting ways.
...as for fuel stations and diesel if you talking about a small station its understandable because usually only have small underground tanks maybe 2000gals or so compared to gas where is most likely 15000gal tank with small stations diesel of course isnt a big seller unless you have a great location with alotta truck traffic. you go to a TA or a petro truck stop most of those (if iam right) hold 100000gals of diesel and usually get daily deliveries.
on a short note....diesel should stay on the same playing field as gas because its a waste product of gas anyways so theres no way it should higher in price then regular gas. i was loving interstate-70 i wish i had a TDI some areas regular 2.09 diesel 1.98 to this day i still kick myself for not buying the TDI

I'd be happy to discuss the future of propulsion in cars but here it would be hijacking. There is a thread like it in the either off-topic or general efficiency from a few weeks ago

That's old news, thankfully though they are still doing them (so it didn't fade off into obscurity). Now Honda is evaluating them.

Around town you have to use a lot of finesse in a regular gasser (i.e. EOC and have a stick shift) to compete with the hybrids. I enjoy beating the pants off of hybrids on MPG, so I know it is entirely possible, but I do have to "work" for it.

Hybrids don't buy you much on the hiway. But they do bring electric motors and batteries into the mainstream, so I'm not complaining too much.

I wish it worked like that! All thinks considered, a diesel w/ decent gearing will get about the same mileage a diesel hybrid would give or take a few mpg in everything but super crowded city traffic.
