Several other vehicles have had this problem as well... Including several generations of the Exploder (Explorer).
During a rear impact, a portion of the crumple zone would inevitably splinter and puncture the gas tank, allowing fuel to leak onto the hot exhaust. The fix was a single plastic cover over a square foot or so of the tank, which deflected the "shrapnel".
Ford's not the only company that's done this though, not necessarily pertaining to fuel system mishaps, but stupid chinsyness to save a buck. Chrysler just about built an empire on it.
