I love how the guy on the back explodes. Not the truck, just the guy. Badass.

Ford Pinto. They were known for burning in rear-end collisions. It created a scandal as the problem was known and the fix would have cost Ford a few more dollars/vehicle, but they decided not to do it.

Several other vehicles have had this problem as well... Including several generations of the Exploder (Explorer).

During a rear impact, a portion of the crumple zone would inevitably splinter and puncture the gas tank, allowing fuel to leak onto the hot exhaust. The fix was a single plastic cover over a square foot or so of the tank, which deflected the "shrapnel".

Ford's not the only company that's done this though, not necessarily pertaining to fuel system mishaps, but stupid chinsyness to save a buck. Chrysler just about built an empire on it.

How close to highway-ideal is the rear of a Pinto? I might be able to get one to steal a shape from.

Pinto: not particularly ideal. The hatch angle is too steep. Car and Driver improved rear flow with a significant spoiler, see: $11 worth of mods plus new tires - Car and Driver improves MPG by 25%

Maybe if basjoos had had a "Pinto" badge on the back of the Aerocivic, he wouldn't have suffered that hit & run!
