PaleMelanesian - Instead of using the fuel to bump start and shut it back off, you can just slip the clutch w/ the key off for a second... this means you aren't using fuel, but you're still generating vacuum to refill the booster.

On my first Civic, the booster was no good, so I just removed it and ran manual brakes... on really light cars, it's not that bad, especially if your whole braking system is designed the right way to make the pedal easy.
