True, some new cars have electric steering. I forgot about that.

I looked for a power steering pump in my yaris, so i could disconnect it. Didn't find any but did eventually find a power steering motor under the dash. It's like a windscreen wiper motor actually. I didn't bother disconnecting it as i couldn't be bothered! Hey, my last tank was 3.2L/100k. Even if i halved that i'd save only 6 euro per week. Our govt has slapped a 2% levy on our wages and health ins has gone up so it's a drop in the ocean really!

PaleMelanesian - Instead of using the fuel to bump start and shut it back off, you can just slip the clutch w/ the key off for a second... this means you aren't using fuel, but you're still generating vacuum to refill the booster.

On my first Civic, the booster was no good, so I just removed it and ran manual brakes... on really light cars, it's not that bad, especially if your whole braking system is designed the right way to make the pedal easy.

Now that's a good idea! Why didn't I think of that?

A small (no, really... small) electric vacuum pump would provide a better backup solution, as it wouldn't involve drag on your coast, and only draw a very small bit from the battery, not enough to bother anything.

Or just enlarge the vacuum booster reservoir with a PVC tube with capped ends and a vacuum hose teed into the line going to the booster behind the check valve.

You could still exhaust your vacuum supply if you're pumping your brakes, like going down a hill or something... then again, at this point, you should be using DFCO anyway, so it's less of a concern.

Yes our Yarii use electric assist steering. An electric motor takes the place of a hydraulic system.
