The 84-87 Fieros shared a lot of parts with other FWD GMs. The '88 Fiero had Fiero-specific suspension and brakes (front and rear) so they had much better braking and handling than the earlier Fieros. That's why I chose to start with an '88 Fiero, it's the best platform to start from. The Formula is even better because it has the V6 (more power) and the sporty suspension (stiff springs, sway bars, etc.) but doesn't have all the added weight that comes with the options on the GT.
The '88 GT is still my favorite, I much prefer the styling of the GT. I have one of those also. It has about 210k miles on it. There's your Fiero history lesson for the day!
