Seems like my factory setup works something similar to this. Fuel lines run into the regulator between the fuel rails, which are almost fully enclosed by the intake manifold atop the engine block at the bottom, and the large flat aluminum intake plenum at the top.

There is also a place for hot coolant to pass through the throttle body.
