At the end of June, I started out on a cross-country trip in my Scion xB. There were four memorable legs on that trip.

First was a 75 mpg downhill run from Truckee, CA to Reno, NV, involving a 2000' elevation drop, over a 40 mile distance. At the 35 mile mark, I was still averaging 80 mpg!

Second was a 58 mpg downhill run from a summit to Ely, NV, again over a 40 mile distance.

Third was a 165 mile drive from Gallup, NM to Tuba City, AZ involving no net elevation change. It was a perfect day on a perfect road, climbing mesas that offered long 5+ mile runouts, with no traffic, allowing me to slow down to 35 mph and drag my glides out longer. I averaged 59 mpg for that 165 miles! That's 211% of my 28 mpg EPA combined mileage for 165 miles.

Fourth was my whole drive home from Gallup to the Bay Area. I averaged 51.5 mpg for 1213 miles - 184% of EPA. for over 1200 miles.

My worst mileage was 32 mpg driving at 70 mph to meet some friends. In spite of that, and despite hauling four people and all our gear up and down the length of Florida with cruise control and AC running, I averaged 44.7 mpg for 7238 miles.in the Scion.
