The last one I was working on a few years ago had a 600cc Honda engine on it, with the Honda's sequential transmission as well, and it had a single speed axle with chain drive. I was always afraid to go faster than 3rd gear 3000 RPM. On lawn mower tires, that's not really all that fast, but considering it had 7500 RPM and 5 or 6 gears, I'm sure it would have been enough to kill me... or at least get really close.

This one that I'm doing now (verrrrrrry slooooowly) is just a 12HP briggs single cyl using the OEM 4 speed axle (non-synchronized, damn). With proper gearing, it should be able to go 60MPH, but I won't do it that often. This one is being built with a saginaw steering box, hi-load front tires, and 245/50R14 tires on Keystone Classic 14x7 on the rear.
