Around 2-grand on a super-cold start.

There may be something amiss with a control valve of sorts (idle-air, etc.) On mine, it's a wax-based internal that melts at "warm" and allows proper intake flow. If it's solid, the air is bypassed, allowing a higher idle.

EDIT: Since you have a carb, make the appropriate adjustments with the set-screws.

Just jam it into 2nd and roll with it right away -- idling is your enemy. I do that with the automatic and let the extra idle carry the car. If you don't have some sort of engine block heater, I would get one now.
