I have a much older subaru, and it is like that too.
1. I do have a favorite gas station, that really is a factor
2. outside air and injection gadgetry change to weather, (a boxer does not suck like an inline).
there is other stuff, like EGR, plastic air intakes, and the ej engine double fires to make a strange day dramatic. bad fuel is..twice as bad, pun intended. On the other hand it is so very easily fixed. a metallic tubing for CAI, and be sure it gets a good stable whiff from outside like OE. I would start there.
