I have a much older subaru, and it is like that too.
1. I do have a favorite gas station, that really is a factor
2. outside air and injection gadgetry change to weather, (a boxer does not suck like an inline).

there is other stuff, like EGR, plastic air intakes, and the ej engine double fires to make a strange day dramatic. bad fuel is..twice as bad, pun intended. On the other hand it is so very easily fixed. a metallic tubing for CAI, and be sure it gets a good stable whiff from outside like OE. I would start there.

Call me a sucker too. Many years ago I bought a K&N for my Honda Accord - and then my first Firefly - hoping it would be better for fuel economy. Wishful thinking on my part before digging deeper into the issue. I later reinstalled the OEM filter in and sold the K&N to someone else.

It's been a while since I checked the K&N site, and here's their official position: "we do not go so far as to make a general claim that our air filters and intake systems will provide an increase in mileage."

If they did, they'd likely face a government lawsuit for misleading advertising/unsubstantiated claims.

Anyway, let us know if/when you get some fuel economy instrumentation. You won't regret it.

The stock airfilter and box is good for about 350 hp. A K % N has been found to add 5 hp to a 400 hp subaru setup. They've been found to contaminate the MAF sensor with oil AND dirt. If you're going to run one, check and clean your MAF regularly.

If you've got more than 60k miles, a new front 02 sensor will make a big difference. I changed mine at 68k and it idled and accelerated much smoother.

Also, for some reason, the turbo subarus love copper spark plugs. The don't last as long as the stock iridium plugs, but they clear up knock issues and add a tiny bit of power.

Very helpful advice ncs, thanks.
Its got about 86,000 on it. Can't afford an o2 sensor right now, pity because thats a pretty easy thing to do (well, it was on a 2000 cavelier... I'll look up its exact location on an EJ20 manifold.... heh.)
