That's how it should be, but look at the prices of an SUV and a modern econocar. The latter is like 3 times smaller, its engine has 6 times smaller displacement, but costs at least the same (or more likely more) than the SUV.
This is partially because of politics, and partially because the smaller engine is usually more advanced technologically.
