One of us is obvious out of touch here. I admit I don't really keep up with car prices, but from what I see $40K is a fairly normal price for a new car. People shell out that much and more for new SUVs and trucks, even for sedans. Or to pick another limited-production Chevy - yet one I see on the roads often enough - a quick search shows MSRP for the Corvette running between $48K and $103K, so obviously there are people willing to pay those prices.
