Even with just moderate hand tightening, I've had filters become a real bear to get off.
I always use my bare hands too. My TDI has a top loading cartridge type filter. I unfortunately had to get my oil changed by someone else than me once in the past. Comes the next oil change, after reciting all the most known words from The Book and finally getting the job done, I had to let some people know that the correct torque value is not attained with a cheater bar, but is pretty much the minimum value that will prevent a leak. I guess these people think an o-ring is just like a crush washer.
