Even with just moderate hand tightening, I've had filters become a real bear to get off.
I always use my bare hands too. My TDI has a top loading cartridge type filter. I unfortunately had to get my oil changed by someone else than me once in the past. Comes the next oil change, after reciting all the most known words from The Book and finally getting the job done, I had to let some people know that the correct torque value is not attained with a cheater bar, but is pretty much the minimum value that will prevent a leak. I guess these people think an o-ring is just like a crush washer.

^You got it!

Even worse are the ones that use cheater pipes on 3/4" drive rachet wrenches to tighten oil drain plugs. I have had to weld big hex nuts on them bastids in order to get em off!

What you said: It pretty much just has to be tight enough to not leak and not fall off. They ain't dang lug nuts.

I have yet to find someone dumb enough not to understand how a fumoto valve works.

I use a strap wrench to REMOVE my oil filters, my HANDS to put on a new one. The O-ring gives enough of a seal with a little oil on it, and that is more than sufficient to prevent leaks. Good detective work, we finally solved this case.

In the future, do not use a strap wrench/torque wrench to put on an oil filter.

Whoa there, slow down please. Could someone address the whole 4 months before the damage became apparant thing. Is it really possible for me to have damaged it while putting it on and to not realize it for 4 months? If this is possible, then great thanks so much for all your guys help. But it does seem unlikely to me.

I put on my oil filters hand tight, then use the strap wrench till the filter just looks like it's going to dent. I've always heard "hand tight + 1/4 turn" and this seems about right. Never had a problem taking them off with the strap wrench. Only filter I've ever had to put a screwdriver through is the 6k wagon when I bought it, it had been sitting in a field behind my coworker's house for 6 years with a blown head gasket.

Wagonman76 - I put a screwdriver through all of them to pre-drain them, unless they're seal-side down. I then wipe them down and remove them with my bear hands, usually.

I usually just tighten them up as much as I can with my index, middle finger, and thumb in a triangle position around the filter, which usually isn't too much. They tend to make contact and never go more than 1/2 turn after that. They get "tight" very quickly.
