I put on my oil filters hand tight, then use the strap wrench till the filter just looks like it's going to dent. I've always heard "hand tight + 1/4 turn" and this seems about right. Never had a problem taking them off with the strap wrench. Only filter I've ever had to put a screwdriver through is the 6k wagon when I bought it, it had been sitting in a field behind my coworker's house for 6 years with a blown head gasket.
